Can anyone give me tips on how to adjust linkage on my '89 evinrude 90hp?

Just rebuilt the entire engine top to bottom and disabled vro pump (highly recommended if you don't mind mixing your own gas). During the rebuild all of the linkage settings went out of whack and now the engine will barely idle. I have a timing light and understand how to use it is just don't know a whole lot about how to sink timing with the throttle on the carbs. I have a repair manual but it only has is specs and measurements of where to put things but this doesn't help me since every thing is a bit old and worn out.

What things should I look for when adjusting linkage?
How does the timing work with the throttle valves?

Any other information will be very much appreciated!

Thanks

The procedure you are trying to do is called "sync and link." It's detailed very well in the factory service manual of that year. Complete with pictures. It's difficult to describe in a test here, so best you try to borrow a factory manual for your year engine. Or, check out this website: outboardbooks.com

The procedure is many pages long and you are advised to start at the beginning and go to the end. Starting in the middle or skipping steps because you don't understand them is a good way to bugger a perfectly good motor because timing or carb settings are not correct. Do this with throttle and shift cables disconnected.
