Remove the screw (from port side) from shift rod lever. All of this is located at the bottom front of the crankcase and is dificult to see. You need a wobbly socket with a long extension.

Thanks for the headstart, I have removed everything in the way of the shift rod. I can see where a connecting block it attached to the shifting lever which is connected to the shift cable. The connecting block has a pin or someting through the shift rod. I need to get this pin out.

However, I have limited vision to see any screw head. I have felt around and it's a clean application. Could this be a drift pin ? Or did the previous owner break it off and not fix.

I have done several water pumps on smaller motors but this is a terrible set up.

You need a wire with a hook at the end, I use
hangar wire. You need to hook the shaft an either
pull or push offset off of the shaft. Yes, difficult to see
but grabbing the shaft from below can help you wiggle
the shaft free. Real helpful reattaching shaft.

After your email I figured out what the deal was. It 's not a pin or a srew It's the actual attachment. The close hanger worked great, Thanks to all for your help and time.

Have a great 4th. Be safe

Sorry if I'm too late, but you shouldn't have to loosen any bolts. The pin on the shift lever (starboard side by shift cables) gets pulled, then you push the shift lever towards the port side. You may need to move your shift cables out of the way to get full movement to disengage the shift lever from the shifter.
