88 Johnson 70 VRO (Alarm noise)

My engine is trying to start, but will not, it puffs out a ton of smoke, and there is also a alarm noise coming out of the throttle console. (Where you put the key). Any ideas what the alarm is?

(Also, when you turn the key to prime the engine, the alarm goes off)

The alarm is also a constant alarm, and from reading your threads that means it is a overheating alarm. Why would it be sending an alarm that it is overheating if it hasnt even been run for 20 seconds. I got it started and it seems to be running alright, has a weak start, but thats about it. And why would the alarm go off when I havent even started it yet, only when im priming it..

Constant alarn, key on, engine off. Bad alarm horn. The selftest logic is part of the horn and goes bad. Wires must be in good condition and connected to the right place. The easy way to test, disconnect wire connector to VRO, overheat sensor, oiltank sensor. Key on, alarm sound, horn bad.
