Just so you are aware........ any shim or jack plate will add stress to your transom. You are creating the best defense now by replacing the old transom.

Re: 87 Savage Electra Hull Restoration

OK had some progress this weekend on the transom prep work to sand/grind/scrap, etc to clean the outer skin as much as possible. I also cut out some of the stress points on the old glass where the shim plates created deep divets on the old glass and a fracture between the 2 plates. I forgot to take a photo once I finished applying CSM and bi-axle to cover these small holes beore glassing the whole skin putting on another layer of bo-axle with the glassed transom. That was enough for the day to run out of light and call it a night. Next I will plan for next weekend peanut butter around the transom and fillet it to prepare for the tabbing and then final bi-axel and 2 coats of CSM to glass it in. Oh yeah I forgot the plugs! Will put these in with stainless screws and a piece of PVC piping feeding into the bilge box and peanut butter it and glass it. Am I missing anything before I start on the stringers?

its hard to tell on a photo but i think you need to get a small angle grinder and a flapper disk (looks like sand paper glued in layers) and clean the sides and bottom just a little bit more. i know its a pain but it will give a cleaner edge. once the transom in glassed in. cap the original stringers with 2 layers of csm then cut the new stringer make sure they have a small space under them for pb fillet pre glass the ends before glassing them in this will stop any moisture getting in. then using off cuts of ply cut pieces that are smaller than the stringer height about 12" long and glass them on the bench then pb them to the inside of the of the original stringers and the new stringers in a sister type joint this will require cleaning 6" off the sides of the original stringers for the pb to get a good contact to (stay on the inside so they will not show in the biege area but will be hidden under the floor) a few stainless screws would also help make the joint secure then a layer off glass over the joint thats not sistered will cover the screw heads

Thank you Glenn property of pam! This week I'll spend some time sourcing out some flapper disks since I have decided to tear out all the deck once the transom. I can see I am going to be getting very familiar with prepping old glass for pb and new glassing to stick so will give me good prac! Good thing I have left a good space to slip the flapper disk under the transom before applying the pb fillet next weekend. Oh yeah I already have a small grinder so will test this weekend to see how I go improving the prep work.

Just double checking what is meant by a sister joint? I think I have sourced one out from doing a Google search from some who referred to it for a timber decking for a backyard so assume this is what you meant?

Great thank you! I will keep that in mind for when I get started on the stringers to develop a a plan of action on those 5 stringers and biege area.

Re: 87 Savage Electra Hull Restoration

All,
I've been a little distracted the last couple of weeks with putting posts up since I've been a little under the pump by the wife and work. Now it is time to concentrate on the hobby we all are here for. After I glassed the transom to the outer skin I took the advise of using a flapper disc and cleaning the old glass down. Wow I have a new found respect for the grinder combined with a flapper disc.
I also make my own peanut butter to fillet the transom tabbing joins. Then I tabbed and glassed the inner transom. I now need to glass it with csm and bi-axle cloth to finish it off before painting it.

Re: 87 Savage Electra Hull Restoration

All,
OK after to logistical efforts of relocating the boat, bits and all the tools we have started to get some progress on the strip out of the old hull flooring. The brother-in-law and I have decided to stop cutting out the original floor just before the fuel tank section where the console sections starts. The reason being that the flooring is in a good state there and did not want to have to redo the divider where the tank goes. OK, I think I know what is required here however, i wanted the community of iboaters who have been there done that to please advise here. Shall I cut out the old fibreglass that you can see below I have marked around to be able to slip the new flooring under what I think is still called the gunnel before glassing it in or shall I leave this tabbing of old glass that I have grinded with a flapping disc (thanks for allowing me to see the light with flaper discs) and glass over the top once cleaned? I hope I make sense? I have a feeling that the best option will be to cut out the old FB so let me see the light iboaters!

BTW, I have cut out the new stringer sections and sister joints. They will be put in before I install the new flooring and bildge area at the back of the hull.

Re: 87 Savage Electra Hull Restoration

All,
An update on this weekends progress. We had a good day of progress yesterday by fitting in the new stringers and completing the joins with the sister type joint. Once they had been glassed and re-enforced with tabbing to keep them down nice and solid, we started to cut the template for the new ply flooring using 6mm ply. We did the template using a roll of xmas wrapping paper and a knife to cut out the edges. We needed to tape to sheets togther to get the wide and then the lenth was just one. Ok with the template cut ou it was a matter of cutting out the ply wood correctly and with minor trimming to get it to fit in I think we did a good job. OK, we galssed the bottom of the ply wood and fitted it in as seen below dry on the top side to allow us to tab the floor in to the hull and then allow us next weekend to put a couple of layers of CSM. Question! Assuming I tab in the edges, how many layers of CSM shall I give this flooring? 2, 3 or more?

Oh yes next weekend I plan on doing holes between each stringer on the new ply at each end to allow me to use pouring foam to give the hull that extra bouyancy it needs to keep it afloat, then cover these holes with the play and glass it in again. Any comments on this procedure and how I may improve on it? Thanks in advanced.

Re: 87 Savage Electra Hull Restoration

All,
See below the photos of the weekends progress on the new floor. I was able to fill the gaps between the stringers in with teh dry fitted flooring with 4kgs pouring foam and then 6 cans of spray on polyurth. foam. As you can see the fun I had was with the foaming of the space under the flooring which kept growing in size poping the floor lids I cut out with the pressure up to 4 hours later. I was able to glass the floor and sand back the transom to get a smooth finish before I begin primering it in preparation for gel coating.
