Well Jason I think I'll pass on dunking my cakes in it. It stinks too bad. Ok which JB Weld should I use to fill pinholes. The stick/putty or the regular stuff. Is polyester resin a no no to use on the transom wood? Somebody told me that it would crack if it was flexed too much. Does the transom flex enough for that to be a problem. Thanks!

Yup, ther regular JB will work great.

Is polyester resin a no no to use on the transom wood?

Poly needs fiberglass to hold onto, otherwise it just kinda cracks up on ya. Epoxy can be used without glass though, great stuff:thumb:

Polyester resin w/out glass cloth/mat is of little value, and yes, it will crack.

Epoxy w/out cloth/mat won't

Spar varnish is better then poly resin w/out glass too

An oldtimey wood sealer formula is... 33/33/33 Mineral Spirits, Boiled Linseed Oil, and Varnish (or Polyurethane) Use a quart of each and put in a gallon container and mix well. Paint your wood with it and really saturate the wood till it pools up. Let sit for at least and hour then wipe off anything that has not been absorbed. Let dry 48 hrs. If you then applied 3-4 coats of Spar Varnish your transom would last a decade with proper maintenance and if you put a couple of coats of Rustoleum Oil Base Paint on it who know's how long it would last. You always want to predrill any holes and coat them and any hardware with 3M 4200 sealant. Doing this will ensure a long transom life.;)

Re: '87 Islander 221 Restoration

Well, I've found a little time here and there to get some more demo and cleaning done but still a long road ahead. So far, I filled my 90 gallon herbie up 4 times with floatation foam and luckily the old wood burned in my fire pit. Just got the gas tank loose from the foam that surrounded it too. There is quite a bit of corrosion around the hole for the lower unit but I guess not as bad as it could be. Going to take the whole boat to my plant so I can raise the front up with a lift and use our High pressure steam cleaner then very lightly sand blast the bad area before I fill it with JB weld. I was wondering if I should zinc chromate the inside of the transom before I install the wood?photo 2 (2).jpgphoto 1 (2).jpgAnd why in the world did they put the boat drain 3 inches higher than the bottom of the boat? Just wondering cause its a pain in the backside to get all of the water out of this thing!

Nice looking Islander you have there. As I see you are from Michigan I am sure you probably know they make great salmon rigs and are very popular hulls on the Great Lakes. Good luck with your project.

Hey thanks Weep'n Willy! I do plan on using it for a lot of fishing with family and friends and a little cruising too. I have family on Hamlin Lake near Ludington and they troll that lake for northern with a small 14' boat. So It'll be up there quite a bit. Just have to buckle down and keep pluggin' away at this thing.

Hey guys, sorry it's been a while since I've been here. I'm working on the wood for the transom and looking at the old one, I noticed that the small piece that the factory uses to make it a full two inches thick is neither painted or coated with anything. I was wondering why this was not painted. I wanted to glue this part to the rest of the transom and seal it together but am worried that it has to be left bare for some reason.. I'll post a few pictures this afternoon.
