Greetings, Everyone! The problem I'm having started sometime last year. Motor starts good after priming, it will idle fine for about 5 minutes or so, then will cough and die, even at low forward speed. If I keep priming, it keeps running. I took the carbs off for a cleaning, and there was what appeared to be oil in the bottom of the carb cover, or burnt fuel since I plugged the VRO last year and started mixing fuel/oil. Anyway, cleaning the carbs did not help. It also seems that as I start increasing the throttle, speed increases slowly, much hesitation. Runs fine at WOT, so I'm assuming that it's not the fuel pump. I did replace the thermostats beginning of last year, don't know if this would have anything to do with it. Changed the plugs recently to Champion QL78YC, gapped at .040, which I saw was recommended on this forum. Going to 1000 Islands in a month, and I gotta get this thing runnin right. Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to iboats. If you pump your primer bulb that bypasses your fuel pump. This is the test for a weak/faulty fuel pump. Replace it and see what happens. Good luck on your trip.

Hello, Fireman, and thanks for the fast reply. I was kinda considering replacing fuel pump, but thought since it ran fine at WOT, it ruled out the fuel pump. I guess I'll check out ebay, see what I can get one for and try it out. Thanks again! BTW, Is there a certain model # I should look for, or are they pretty much all the same.

Get the model number off of your transom bracket. You will need this. Screw ebay and go to your local dealer or you can probably buy it right here.

Fireman, model # on transom says E140TLCUA. Do you know if the pumps for this model come without the oil side, and how much they go for retail? I don't have any Evinrude dealers in my area, so I will probably need to get one online, somewhere. Thanks!

Sorry I didn't get back to you but I farm and don't get on here as often as I would like. You can order one from right here at iboats I believe.

Re: '87 Evinrude 140 dies on idle

Success!!!!!!!!!! Today I installed my new VRO pump ( Part# 438402, 5007422 non-oil pump) and my motor no longer stalls on idle, it does idle a little rough, though, but anyway, it runs!!! I leave for 1000 Islands in less than 3 weeks and can't wait for this much deserved vacation! Thanks for the help, Fireman! :)
