Hey iboaters....

I've been lurking around these forums for quite awhile. but now have a project boat that I am about to start working on (I'll start a new thread about the actual restoration with photos, etc... soon)

I picked up a 1987 18' Bayliner bass striker. I can't seem to find the max motor rating. I can't find the plaque in the boat that would have this info. It may have been carpeted over by the last owner.

Any info would be great!
thanks!

Re: 87 bayliner Bass Striker motor

Thanks for the info!

The boat is a 1810 I believe.

The chart listed above, shows 1709 and 1809. but no 1810.

The 18 foot boats listed here are rated for 125HP. and the 17' models are 80 and 90 hp. I am looking at a 100 hp. So as long as I am right about the 18' length (the title says its 18'), the 100 hp should be ok. But I will continue to look for the exact specs I need.

Thanks again

opps, never mind what I just said. I just checked the title. It is a 1987 1809. So the info you gave me is correct, and it looks like the 100HP that Im looking at will be fine.

Now, if its rated for 125hp, should I look for something bigger than 100hp? will I be happy with only 100 measly horsepower?????

thanks again for the info!

Re: 87 bayliner Bass Striker motor

I'd look for motors in the 100-130 range. Instead of searching for just 1 size OB. You may find a 115 that ticks off all the right boxes (like has tilt & trim). Same w/ an Evinrude vs Johnson vs Mercury. Cruise the motor forums & read some of the motor threads. It'll help when you go to look at motors that 'ran last year/season' or whatever the ad may read for an OB. You may end up buying entire boat, motor & trailers to get a good running OB. So look for complete boats too.

A complete boat is more likely to have an OB that can be cranked over or fired rather then just an OB that's been leaning against the back wall of a garage for 10-15yrs. Plus it'll likely have controls for the OB, any associated wiring harness & even steering setups to scavenge.

Re: 87 bayliner Bass Striker motor

Thx jbcurt.

I actually was looking for motors 80-120 hp. i found a 100hp mariner. it does need control cables, but is coming from someone I trust. And even with getting new controls I think the price seems about right.

Looking on CL at motors starts to scare me. I see 2 similar motors with a huge price difference. and I get nervous about the more inexpensive one, and the whole "you get what you pay for" thing. Thats why the Mariner I found yesterday caught my eye. I know the guy selling it (actually is part of a business), and he is pretty reputable. If the motor wasn't in good shape, he sells them to someone else to fix up and sell on thier own. This motor was taken as part of an upgrade trade in.

thx again, and any other info or insight is greatly appreciated!!!
