Well i just recently got done rewiring the whole boat and now its looking like that was a big waste of time. But i got done with the wiring and fired the motor up and it ran great, untill my dad wanted to come over and hear the boat and he spotted a drip that was seeming to be coming from the starter area and when revved up slightly it would squirt out from the starter it looked, and from what i have read so far it is either the freeze plugs behing the flywheel housing or the block is cracked back there or are there any seals that could be leaking?

shift into fwd and remove the drive
remove/unhook hoses, control cables, battery connections, etc.
remove front motor mount lags and 2 rear mounting bolts
lift up and out,, remove flywheel housing, coupler, flywheel
core plug rusted away= should have been brass not an auto steel one
crack in block = self evident.

I need to remove the entire drive unit correct? I have never pulled a boat motor or drive off/out but am fairly mechanicaly inclined.

Pulling the drive is relatively easy. Shift into forward (that aligns the shift fork on the drive so you can slip it out). Remove the two nuts holding the lift cylinders and remove the cross shaft. Remove the six nuts around the drive. Pull the drive back and out. BT Doctor covered the rest. Shoot some photos before you remove cables, hoses, and wires so you know how things go back together. Download the service manuals for your engine and drive. "4shared.com" is one source. The hardest part is getting an engine hoist that can lift the engine high enough to clear the edges of the boat. Good luck. Hope it's just a core plug. Hy

Re: 87 350 mag water coming from starter?!

Thanks guys that's the info I needed. I will be pulling the drive unit off tonight after work, and unhook all the hoses and wires. If all goes well I will be able to pull the motor out at work tomorrow with the use of our ceiling hoist for unloading the steel trucks. Is it pretty easy to realign the motor when I go to put it back in?
Thanks for the help again.

alignment is super easy IF you make sure the nuts on the front mounts are loosened and removed ,wirebrush the threads, installed loosely
on the front mounts .

Re: 87 350 mag water coming from starter?!

Well beforte I started tearing into my liberator I decided to fire it up and run it one more time just to make sure and it would not leak any water at all from anywhere but it was running off the garden hose and the muffs, so I droped it in the lake and took it for a few laps and still not a single drop of water leaking from the motor!!!!!? Now im slightly confused as to why I would have seen water leaking from that point yesterday but not today. The boat did sit for about 2 weeks in the driveway covered but we did get one pretty good rain storm so could it off possibly just built up condensation and the flywheel was spitin it out?

Also on my test laps around the lake to try and make it leak again, I was having a few issues with gettin the boat to shift properly from forward to reverse. It was pretty hard to get it to pop into neutral and after the first half lap when trying to run WOT it was acting as if it was cutting out then it would come back then cut out again and it would do this quit rapidly. Also if I hit the trim up or down it seemed as if it was killing the motor for a split second. sorry for the long post guys

Re: 87 350 mag water coming from starter?!

It was at a shop to get a leak in the stern somewhere fixed and from what the guy said they did flood the bilge to find it and they said it didnt leak. I wouldnt have thought they could have put that much water in it, and yes I already have an issue with the starter. It will click but only click and then about every 10 tries it will actually turn the engine over. What is a good brand starter to replace it with and can I rebuild the selinoid or do I have to replace that also?
