So I picked up this boat the other day for seven hundred. The motor is locked up from what he said and when I tried the starter it wouldn't turn. But was wonder if a marine rebuild is difficult and I ripped out the carpet and vinyl in the interior because it was trashed from being in uncovered storage. The deck also has some sponge spots from rot and was wondering the best way to go about that. Should I take it all up? Go over it? And carpet or use diamond plate. Does weight need to be kept to a minimum on boats? And is there a way I can get a pipe wrench on that crank? Pull the motor easy and rebuild? Any beginner to boating advice and advice on my project will be much Appreciated and motor is 140 mercrusier.
Thank you

Re: 86' sylvan, trashed motor/ interior

Welcome aboard blackhawk!

Someone is going to say it, so it might as well be me :joyous:

For a project boat you want one that's mechanically sound with a trashed interior, or a good interior that needs mechanical work. It sounds like this boat needs everything repaired, deck (stingers, transom, soaked foam?) interior, engine/drive...

For the engine being locked up, pull the drive and see if the engine turns over. A locked up drive will keep the engine from turning. Pull the plugs and see if they are rusty. Where are you from, ever freeze in the winter?

The rotted deck will need to be pulled up and replaced. Look through the resto forum to see what others have found in boats with rotted decks,,, soaked foam, rotten stringers, rotten transom.

Weight needs to be kept down on boats for best performance. There should be a USCG capacity plate stating the max load in the boat, max load being anything extra in the boat; people, gear, additional equipment, couple hundred pounds of waterlogged foam....

Oh yeah..... Pics! We like pics! No pics, it didn't happen

Just as an FYI, If you have not considered a Budget for this rebuild, Based on the picture you have painted, I'd Guess-Ti-Mate a minimum of$4,000 to get this boat on the water. Just so you'll have a vague idea of what you're wallet is in for!!!;)

Pics would most certainly help. Is it aluminum or fiberglass? It depends on what kind of power is on it I/o or outboard. Either way rather than rebuild I would start looking on craigslist for a donor boat with good motor. If its aluminum and an outboard you can be done with a useable and cost effecient boat and be reliable for under $2500 if you don't want anything special, and you shop very very well for your supplies and repower.

Facepalm

I just reread your post you are an i/o more $$$

Meaning this is also a glass boat (more than likely), You are probably going to be on the scope of Woodonglass estimate. What outdrive does the boat have if its an OMC you may just want to consider another boat.
