Cj8mule, Do you have a scrambler. I plow with a cj-5. Eddy622611

Yes, it's an old '83 with 1 ton runing gear. I've seen people plow with a cj5. A cj5 sure can get in some places I couldn't with my 22' long truck. One of my contracts was for a Burger King in Denver that had curbs around the drive-through. My blade was 10' including the wings and the curbs were 10' apart :D That got very interesting since I was responsible for any damage.

These guys gave you some great advice on those low compression numbers. Run that stuff through for a while and check that compression again.

You did OK on the purchase. In the end, you're going to have a boat that you know everything about. As far as a budget.... well,,, that's all up to you. You could easily spend 3-4K for a new power head, seats, vinyl, wood, spar varnish or epoxi, floatation, paint, and hardware. Just tell the Admiral you need $5000 so when you come in under budget she will be happy. You also might want to get a picture and price quote for a new boat to help her swallow that 5K pill. ;)

Re: 86 Starcraft SS 160

As always if you decide to got the carb/cylinder spray route, be careful of how much is sprayed it as you can cause damage to the motor as it will have to try and compress the seafoam IF too much is sprayed in. I went the pour half a bottle in 1 gallon of gas route and idled the motor for 15 minutes + while it ran it through route. Then let it sit for 30 minutes. Then took it for a drive. Worked great on my motor. This method is kinda similar to stripping paint.... apply the stuff... let it sit and do it's job... then strip it off.

PS - Check out Glen's current thread on the polish he used from sonus and the job it did to the paint on his boat --- same type of blue and now looks brand new!

Take care,

Jim

Re: 86 Starcraft SS 160

Didn't get to do the seafoam today. The weather went from unseasonly mild to winter over the last few days. I think I am going to have him remove the cylinder head so we can inspect the damage a little more closely. If I can have the powerhead rebuilt, the hull restored and end up with nice, dependable rig for $5000.00 or less I'm all in. Nothing ruin a day at the lake with the family faster than having boat trouble.
My daughter is 15 and my son is 11 won't be long and they will be grown. So this is no time to be frugal. Lots of memories to be made in a short time. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks,eddy622611

Jim, I already ordered the one step selant that Glen used. His work on those boat has inspired me. The fact that I have boat the same color as the master starcraft restorer is just plain cool. Thanks for your help. If I could have the powerhead rebuilt for a $1000. to $1500. would be wonderful. I was thinking $2000. to $2500. I Have to hire that out. The hull restoration is the type of work that I enjoy. eddy622611

Jim, I just watched a video of you in your Jupiter. If I had any doubt that I was wasting my time restoring this boat, its all gone now. eddy622611

Hmmm.... I'm not sure about a reuild from a marine mechanic for 1K or 1.5K. I think you can get a rebuilt power head for that price, but now you have the labor. I believe you would be more correct on what you where thinking on the 2.5K.

Good luck Brian!

Thanks Brian. My plan is to eventually build one to the standard that Glen has set. I just need a few more skills and a little bit more cash.

Well,,,,, Ok ,,,,, maybe a lot more skill ,,, but I'm learning!

Thanks for all the compliments guys, but you can do it if you hang around on this site long enough, you are bound to pick up lots of ideas and techniques from all the experienced people on here. I hope I am am able to pass on some of the skills I have learned from all the great guys on this site.

The Girats One step is a great product, and real easy to use. The blue on your SS is the same color as Ole Blue and I was amazed at how it came back.

Re: 86 Starcraft SS 160

Well it looks like I need to rebuild the powerhead. After a little more investagation it appears the high speed jet in one of the carburators got some dirt in it. The result was a lean condition that burnt the piston. My mechanic (retired machinist) works out of a small shop next to his home and performs all the work himself. He has worked on my other boat in the past and I have always been happy.
In the end I should have a like new motor for a reasonable price. Once he removes the powerhead I am going to bring the boat home and do the work on the hull, so stay tuned for some restoration fun complete with pictures. Brian

Re: 86 Starcraft SS 160

I brought the boat home on thursday. My son and I spent the weekend removing the interior, floor and foam. The floor was in worse shape than I thought. The section under the passenger seat had been repaired before. I need to know how much gluvit I need and where to buy it. What thickness plywood should I use for the floor? 5/8" or 3/4" My next step is to polish the paint on the hull.

Great job cleaning it out, and good to have gotten the un-sealed pressure treated ply (the repair, PT, correct?) out.

You'll likely need a quart of Gluvit. Marine supply store local? West Marine, maybe local? Iboats carries it. Many find it low priced online, even after shipping...

Coat-it is similar and has been used by some, but it is black, Gluvit is a clearish amber/green...

Re: 86 Starcraft SS 160

Nice work cleaning it out... and I agree with JB that it was a good thing to get that PT out when you did! I am a fan of going with whatever was in there as original IF you plan on put the interior back as it was. This way all of the interior panels etc will fit properly. Otherwise, 5/8 will do fine... 3/4 is much heavier but gives some extra rigidity and sound deadening. Depending on what you buy, 3/4" panels also tend to be less warped... splitting hairs here... but you get the idea I hope! :) I am a fan as many are, of Gluvit. I left my boat in the water for close to 2 months straight --- not a drop leaked in!

I've tried Iboats and Marine Engines.com both are out of stock on the 2lb size of Gluvit.

Re: 86 Starcraft SS 160

I wasn't sure if I needed to use 3/4" since I removed the support of the pour in foam. Using 5/8" would be alot easier.
