Re: 85 HP starting problem

I would advise that you refrain from running the engine until you have fixed the problem. Or, you may run the engine lean and ruin the motor.
The problem may be a fuel pump that is going bad, a vacuum leak somewhere in the fuel line or one or more carbs that need to be cleaning or adjusting. I would start by going thru the entire fuel system from fuel tanks, fuel lines, all fuel line connections, fuel pump diaphram and it's check valves and the vacuum line that primes the fuel pump [if it applies]. Sticky float/s in the carb/s and/or incorrect float adjustment.

How about the fuel bulb. Does it pump up correctly?

How about the choke, is it working?

Just a couple more thoughts.

Also, make sure you spray in fuel/oil mix when you are trying things.
Plane gas will hurt your engine.
