85' 150hp driveshaft question

It's a 85 J150TX
The last time I had the lower end off, I noticed the splines on the driveshaft going into the powerhead are getting worn.

Am I going to have to replace the crankshaft also, is it a harder metal that fails after the shaft?

Those splines need to be greased.------Misalignment between lower unit and powerhead ( bent / warped exhaust housing ) can cause it too.-----Crankshaft is hardened steel. and not stainless.

I'll be sure to keep it greased better. I only did it whenever changing the impeller

They had a ---" make room on the shelf " sale on them till they ran out.----$250 was last price.-----Down from about $2000 or so.-------Your location ?-----Good used is the option as you already know.

I saw that price as NLA. Ouch
Here in lower Michigan we're big on I/O's for that HP if it's that old. Lots of big newer 4 strokes on bass boats tho.
I personally don't like smokers either, but the low maintenance is a good trade off plus I can run it right up to lake freeze and drain it right at the ramp each time out.
I know of 1 boneyard in northern MI that specializes in O/B, they might have a whole upper with burned pistons for the same price as selling just the crankshaft

Thanks, Ontario's only about an hour away, even closer if I'm in the Detroit river or Lk Erie fishing.
