Tip: Put your PB in a Ziploc Bag, cut off one corner and then use it like a Pastry bag to squeeze out the PB along the stringer Bed Line. It works great!

A great tip - Thanks! I'm hoping that I'll have my transom & stringers installed by the end of the long weekend... knock on wood (OK, fiberglass over wood) - fingers crossed... etc.!

Transom dry fit & waterproof

Transom dry fit & waterproof

Progress!! Transom pieces have been glued-up, trimmed and sanded, and are ready for it's first coat of poly...
TransomDryFitWeb.jpg TransomCoatedPolyWeb.jpg

I'm a bit worried about the weather, it's been very humid/rainy in my neck of the woods for well over a week now, and today is no exception.

Time will tell if the catalyzed polyester will kick-off properly - fingers are crossed. The weather forcast is more of the same for the entire holiday weekend. Should I hold-off on using fiberglass in this humidity? I've done some searching on these boards, & thoughts are mixed. Anybody else have success or failure with polyester in these temps & humidity?

2.5L to 4.3L Power Upgrade???

2.5L to 4.3L Power Upgrade???

So, I have the 2.5L engine that I pulled from my boat sitting in my garage, and I'm going to need to purchase a new outdrive - I'll be going with an SEI complete outdrive.

While the 2.5L engine runs just great, I'm thinking that now would be the time to entertain the possibility of upgrading my power. I'm looking specifically at the Mercruiser 4.3L V6, and I'm thinking that this sould make my little 19' Seville haul booty.

Questions:
- Can the boat handle the horsepower & extra weight? I'm replacing the 1/2" stringers with an additional 1/2" cap, with full 1" stringers, so there should be more rigidity there.

- What about lift hydraulics - would my Alpha 1 Gen 1 stuff all be compatible.

- What about throttle/shift controls & steering?

Has anyone performed this kind of performance upgrade... what difficulties could I expect?

...And of course - what performance difference would I actually see? I'd think it'd be very significant, but you never know, you know?

It looks like SEI sells an Alpha 1/Gen 1 complete drive that will handle the 4.3L engine - but it'd be nice to hear from someone who's actually "done the dirty deed"!

Thanks!!

Full stringer replacement reconsidered

Full stringer replacement reconsidered

Well, after poking-around a bit more towards the bow, I decided to tear-out the cuddy and replace the full stringers. I'm glad that I did, things were a bit wet under there, and the stringers were a bit soft.

So it's back to more demo!

Thanks, bsmithbum - your advice likely saved me more serious issues a few years down the line!

SERIOUSLY considering a MASSIVE power upgrade... anybody???

SERIOUSLY considering a MASSIVE power upgrade... anybody???

I may have a handle on a 5.7L small block V8, can anyone tell me if this is a dangerous thing for a 1985 Sea Ray Seville 19... upgrading from a 120HP 4-cyl to a 260HP powerplant? I've got a new transom & stronger stringers - and I'll be buying a new SEI outdrive.

Is this unsafe, and too much power for the hull design?

Engine... BOUGHT!

Engine... BOUGHT!

Hoping someone can help me out - I bought the 5.7L, 350CI GM mercruiser engine mentioned above, but I need to know where/how to build the forward motor mounts onto the hull.

Can anyone help me out here with dimensions & suggestions?

a couple things to consider with the new merc, your floor layout is gonna be a little different. your doghouse is probably gonna need to be bigger along with the cutout for the engine. I would do a mock up of your engine & outdrive. a dry install. so your not guess measuring your mounts location. I know this is alot of work but it will pay off in the end

Re: 84 Sea Ray Seville Cuddy - Floor work, new interior

Thanks for the suggestion, slick245-ss - well, it looks like I might going to be on my own (except for your suggestion) with regard to sizing & placing front mounting. I have much to do before I need to worry about actually dropping the engine in - I've decided to tear the engine down, to be sure that I don't have "issues" (cracks/leaks... etc.).

As far as room, I've decided not to have a doghouse/jumpseat arrangement - I'm opting for a gunwale-to-gunwale engine hatch, that will act as a sundeck when closed, and I'm putting a rear bench & front buckets in for the new seating. There will be less cockpit sq/ftg for sure, but the bucket seats instead of the lounge seats give me quite a lot more room - should work quite well. (Fingers definately crossed!).

Guess I should have looked at your thread before PMing you! Progress looks great and I am quite jealous on that 350 you got for her! I also had a chance to get one and had to think long and hard but decided to not do it since I'd have to buy a new outdrive, lord knows I've already got enough money sunk in mine! And I really had a worry about how far I'd be able to go with the tiny little 30 gallon tank the boat has, Although since your raising your floor you'll have room to put in a larger tank and with how thirsty that thing will be you'll deff want to! But I bet that thing will move like hell with that powerplant! Keep it up!!

It's all good - Nate, & thanks for the words of wisdom in your PM!

Yeah, I've given quite a bit of thought with regard to hull integrity, I'm doubling the width of the stringers, bedding them properly onto the floor of the hull (the originals were floating), and where the floor was attached to the hull is where my 2nd. set of stringers will go... these will also be bedded/tabbed onto the hull, so I think I'll be good as far as hull integrity goes.

This may be a regretful move, but I think I'm going to keep the 30-gal tank in-place. I trailer the boat to where I "play", and I've never used more than a half-tank with the 2.5L engine on any outing. I hope that I don't regret this decision, but I've got to stop spending  ! I may make room in the engine compartment for an aux. tank if it's needed - or I can always tear out the floor again and replace the tank. NOT!!

My upper unit was toast, & I was going to buy one of those SEI complete outdrives for my 4-cyl engine, but I was able to pick-up an upper unit that's in pristine shape, & with the proper gearing for the 350... so that's what made me take the plunge. It looks like the total cost (if all goes as planned) for the refit will be about what I was going to plunk-down for the SEI unit, but I guess we'll see, right?

Re: 84 Sea Ray Seville Cuddy - Floor work, new interior

Yeah I hear ya on the spending.. luckily my drive and motor are just fine other than the standard preventative maintenance needing done. Only issue I had was when I was taking the gimbal housing off I had a bolt snap off in it and couldn't get it out(tried using an easy out and it snapped off too:grumpy:) So I bought one off ebay for 200 that was in "Pristine condition" and low and behold when I got it the EXACT SAME bolt was snapped off in it! and the seller seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet!:mad-new: But after checking craigslist everyday for a few months one popped up that appeared in good condition off of a boat a guy was scrapping after being involved in a dock collision.. took a look at it and it was in GREAT condition and recently had been off and looked at and had the bellows changed on it(I already have a new bellows kit and am still gunna change them just for spite) Had to take it off the boat myself but only $60! Even came with the trim rams!!:D

But yeah if you only ever went through half a tank you should be just fine! With that 5.7 at the same cruising speed you had with the 2.5 your rpm's will be alot lower and it won't be working nearly as hard so you might not even notice that much more fuel consumption, however WOT will be a whole different story! hah But whenever I go out I always take a 3 or 5 gallon along, enough to make it back to the ramp or fuel dock!

As for your hull strength you are heading down the right path and that thing should be ROCK solid when it's done!

Keep up the hard work and I look forward to updates to come!!

you can always do a top side tank put in a tee fitting so your able plug into the fuel line like a outboard motor & once the topside is dry you just stow & run off the main tank just another .02 for you

True, I'm also going to have quite a lot of room in the engine hatch, which will span from gunwale-to-gunwale... perhaps I'll partition it, and add an aux tank in there.

I'm Back!

I'm Back!

Well, it's been a long cold winter, but we've finally had a day of spring-like weather, so I resumed work on my floor. I left the floor only partially filleted last fall, before putting it all to bed, so I vacuumed the "winter dust" away, washed the areas with acetone & finished that job today. Next step is to tab those bad-boys in - hopefully the temps will hold, and we're finally clear of the cold in our frozen north!

Wow! I am very impressed with your ambition to complete this rebuild! I had an 85 Seville Cuddy that needed everything you're doing, but chickened out and GAVE it to a friend (younger, with much more $$ and time). He's still in work. And I'm very interested in following your progress. I sent my friend the link to this message trail to follow also. Good luck and keep on truckin' (boatin' ??) Ed in Tucson

Hey K6ESS & Woodonglass;
Yeah - between the "board weirdness" at the beginning for the season, & the fact that I blew-out my knee, so it's been hard to do the work that I'd like to get done, I haven't posted very much at all this summer... progress has been glacial. It's my hope to get the floor put-in and foamed by the end of this season, I'll post once I have something to post.

So don't give up on me Woodonglass!! :joyous:
