With some older outboards it's necessary to fill the gearcase from the bottom drain hole till it comes out the vent at the top to get the air out. Is it required with this engine or can I just put in the drain and fill from the top....or does it matter. Thanks. Martin

You can fill it from the top if you have a couple extra hours on your hands.

It should be filled from the bottom hole, then there is a place for the air to escape as it is filled and you know for sure when it is full.

I will get 2 bottles of lower oil, make sure you use LOWER UNIT OIL, not 80/90, and fill one of them clear to the top, makes it alittle easier to fill it, when the oil comes out the top pop the top plug in and it will keep the oil from running out then get the bottom one in and you are done.

It is normal for a little to run out before you get the bottom plug in so no big deal there.

You can pick up a small pump that screws on the gearcase oil bottle at almost any outboard dealer, marina, ect. I got mine at Gander Mountain.

Also check the gaskets under the screws, look for nicks, gouges, and hardening. Replace if warranted or every five years or so to prevent water seepage in ur lower unit. And for gosh sakes dont touch the phillips head screw!

I've got a really Bad habit. I replace the drain plug washers everytime I change the G/C oil. I'm working on how to break it. Also if you fill it from the top and don't get all the air out you can probably look forward to replaceing the upper D/S bearing and ect.
