84 bf100-idles good runs bad

I have a circa 1984 bf100. It's been sitting unused for awhile. It runs pretty good in neutral, but as sun as I put it in gear it runs rough, shakes and wont throttle up - It still turns the prop a bit though. Anybody have any ideas? This is my first outboard and I don't know to much about them so as much info as possible is much appreciated.... this poor dude has got to get his boat on the river.

If the boat has been sitting for a while you likely have a fuel problem. If the fuel is more than a year old and you have access to an external tank, try running with fresh fuel. If you are already using fresh fuel take your carb apart and make sure the bowl is clean and all passages are unobstructed. Old gas turns to varnish and you likely have some gunk somewhere in the carb
