OK guys, rebuilt fuel pump, carburator, fuel filter, new hoses to carb, new coils and condensers. So I noticed the #1 plug wire is on the top of engine block where it is stamped 2. With motor running I pull wire and motor stops. If I reverse wires to correct #s on block the motor backfires. I checked compression and both cylinders hold compression. Little help out there please!

Re: 84 4hp problem

While waiting for a response, I read another post about points. So I went and looked closely at my points and found that one of the points was not touching that center shaft. I adjusted it and now motor runs with much more pep but stops when I pull wire #2 witch is on the bottom of block #ed 1.

The spark plug position when it backfires is when they are reversed.
Did you clean and adjust the points to 0.020" ? Did the coils have any cracks in the covers?

The spark plugs are set to .030. The motor backfires when I put the wires on the same # thats on the block. Just put in new coils. Sorry about the points setting. No. Have no clue how to. Is this easy?

Thanks for the info and I will look close to see if #s were factory or later on block.

your motor wont run and will backfire if the plug wires are reversed, its obvious that, if the motor runs with the #1 plug in the spot that is stamped #2, that stamp means something else!
