83 merc 90 horse need help with shift

1983 merc 90horse why can i get neutral and reverse BUT not FORWARD i tried to put lower unit in with in f and n i have forward until i go into r and then i lose forward but still have n and r cant seam to get it what could it be

not sure i can help, but i know you need to give a bit more info. How are you shifting? on the motor or do you have a remote setup? I had to replace my shift and throttle cables because they just wore out. The cables werent moving freely in the sheaths. I disconnected all the linkage and was able to shift manually without problems. also had a small bend in a plate that connects the cable linkage to the shiftrod. might help to throw your serial# up too. when i have lower unit off it seamed to have forward i put shifter in forward installed lower unit thought i had it pulled it in N had that went to R and lost forward it does the same moveing in with cables unhooked and moved by hand

im pretty sure that when you take the lower unit off, you need to make sure that the shifter and lower unit are both in forward gear when putting it back together, and you may need to spin the flywheel to mesh the gears. someone please correct me if im wrong, and if you did this, sorry.

thanksa lot i did do that i had forward then i went to N then to R could here a click and forward was gone still have N AND R not sure why any help is good thanks
