Ha nusreman, happy belated 25 as well. And it seems you built your trailer in similar fashion as I did. I pushed the rollers up to just touched the hull and welded them there. And for the brackets holding the bunks, I cut them to fit perfectly and welded them as well. Your trailer will forever fit that boat. And it looks great too. :thumb:

Happy Friday everyone!!!

I have a question for the more knowledgeable on painting subjects. I have a few galvanized parts on my trailer, i.e. keel roller brackets, and hitch coupler. Am I correct in thinking that I need a self-etching primer on the galvanized parts before I use the regular primer? I am planning on using the Rust-oleum clean metal primer followed by Rusto oil based paint (with hardener). I have done some looking on line, and the information seems to be somewhat varied, except for the emphasis on good surface prep.

As always, I appreciate any thoughts or experiences!

My opinion, I would certainly block sand the galvanized areas smooth and then shoot some quality primer and follow with your paint. I don't see any other issues myself. You already know the finish is entirely depended on the prep work, so go from there. :thumb:

On the galv supposedly you need to give it a bath with vinegar and water then the self etching primer followed up with clean metal primer ... Thats how I prepped the galv trailer for the MFG ... No peeling paint now for what 3 years . I do have a few little spots of surface rust on a little spot or two ... But I'm strictly salt water so I was expecting it ...

Thanks gm! I know all too well about the quality of prep work = quality of finish product.

Sam, I came across the same information about washing with the white vinegar. Also nice to know that you have had good results over an extended period of time.

Nurseman, where do I start... I really enjoyed getting caught up on your outstanding project. Your thread offers a little bit of everything. There was drama (Wood and Jig), comedy, ladies with fish, an untimely death (poor C-clamp), and even an amazing boat restoration thrown in. I seriously laughed out loud when I read about your son, the shovel, and the sledgehammer. I have 3 boys, and I was one (some say I still am), so I can definitely relate. Looking forward to the completion of your project. Oh, and happy anniversary!

Thanks NorthwestChap! It has been quite a journey doing this little project. Hopefully someday I will actually get to put the boat in the water...

I have to say, build boat projects and ordering things is kind of like Christmas with packages coming in all the time. How can you not like that? :noidea:
