Re: 81 Evinrude 25 HP - No fuel to bottom cylinder

thoughts...it's breathing too many of its own fumes in the garage, do this initial setting outside so the exhaust will be taken away

the idle is still too high, esp. if you intend to snap it in and out of gear < 'ruff on the 'ol dog and gear at that rpm>...just let it warm up more so you can idle it down and it won't die while shifting...this is a litmus test to me as to how well the carb, timing, and overall engine health are faring...this ability to achieve a low steady idle while in gear

hope all goes well during the breakin time

Yeah, I normally have it outside the garage, but had inside last night for the lighting with the garage door open. After it's good and warmed up, in gear it was running about 750-900 rpm. I followed the low idle adjustment as called for in the manual to the T. To get it at a lower RPM it looks like it's going to have to be turned in the "rich" direction another turn or two. I also, noticed that when I put the cover back, that affects it as well.

First off, kudos to you for putting it all back together and getting it running. Hopefully it brings you many years of good service.

Yea I agree, the idle seems a little fast for shifting gears. Will it shutoff if you throttle it down lower?

Great video and thanks for sharing.

Yeah, the lowest I can throttle it down to in nuetral is about 700-750 any lower than that then it starts to wanna cut out, but at that rpm when I shift into gear it starts to sputtering, and again wants to cut out. And it doesn't seem to matter how much I mess with the low speed needle adjustment. I wonder if I have an air leak in one of the oil recurculation hoses and if that has anything to do with it. When I had the motor running last night, I thought I could hear air, but wasn't sure where it was coming from. But I could hear it best starboard side of the motor between the air box and flywheel. I'll get it all figured out somehow. Thanks,

Great job on the rebuild and it looks nice. This was a fun post to read and I'm hoping there is more to come. It has helped to inspire me to not be afraid to get more involved in my own motor problems.

Thanks. Yeah I plan on posting a video on the water at WOT once I get it all broken in.

Re: 81 Evinrude 25 HP - No fuel to bottom cylinder

Question for all, if I take the carburetor back off to check the hose connections on the front of the engine, is there a possibility that this will throw off the throttle/carb syncronization? I ask, because as I stated above I think one of the hoses isn't tight enough on the nipple and it's leaking air and to get to these hoses I will need to take the air box and carb off.

Does fuel/oil actually run through the oil recerculation hoses or is it just air. Currently I have fuel lines, but I'm think vacuum lines may be a better solution, but don't want any fuel to corrode them and eventually collapse.

I have a 1985 Johnson 25 and can confirm it definitely will suck air through the recirc line if the clamp is not tight enough.. It only caused a problem at WOT with this motor. Good luck!

Well, I'm 7 hours into the breakin and everything is goin well. Now that I'm this far in I can run at WOT for short periods of time, and with an 11 pitch prop I'm running at 27mph. However, I think Im going to have to go to a 12 pitch prop as with the 11 pitch prop, at WOT it's running at 5500rpm which the max rpm for this motor per the mfr. Next time I'm on the water I'll take a video and post it here. I hope to get out this weekend.

Ok, folks here's a video of the motor running wide open. It seems to be running like a champ and I think I finally got the low idle adjustment about right. I hope you guys like it, and if you have any comments please let me know. Thanks.

cchildr84,
your motor is running great.

Thanks for sharing your rebuild and taking pics and videos.
I've certainly learned some things along the way.
Enjoy the new motor!

Thanks. Like I've said before, I really enjoyed re-building this motor, and the satisfaction that comes along with a succesful re-build. It was recommended to me to change out the plugs after I completed the 10hr breakin, and when I did, I tested the compression just for the fun of it and both cylinders checked out at 130 psi once I stopped turning the motor. As it was turning they were both around 145-150. So my compression and spark is strong. The only thing that stinks now is I no longer have a project to work on in the evenings when I get home from work. Haha. Many thanks to all of you who helped me through this re-build.

runs like a top, congratulations!...the "not having anything to work on" syndrome will take care of itself...you'll start browsing C/L or ebay, or friends will ask if you'd mind looking at this?...these are the early symptoms

Yeah, I do this quite often. I actually bid on a 35hp johnson, on ebay, here the week before last, but luckily was outbid at the last minute. I say lucky cause I have no means or method of shipping from out of state and I don't have shipping crate.

Well, too bad we're not closer I have a couple project motors to tinker with. :)

Attaboy! Sounds real good. Hope mine will run as well. Don't catch all the fish.
