How do I replace the wood without cutting the aluminum? Do I really need to, or can I just reinforce it?

Hi,

I don't know what your transom condition is in, so cannot answer if it needs replacing. Take a look at some of the transom repair threads on the forum for more information. If you look at the 68-71 link below, you can see how I got mine out.

I found the youtube series posted by jeepcollector91 on his 1966 Starcraft Jupiter really helpful in learning how to take out a transom.

I assume you have an outboard from your diagram. Post some pics so we have a better idea of what you are dealing with.

Basically, the order of removal is this. Take of the motor, then the transom caps, then the bar on top of the transom. Remove the splashwell drain plugs. Then remove all screws, bolts and rivets that are holding the transom in. Once all this is done, if you are lucky, the transom will just slide out. If you cannot slide it out, check to make sure you have not missed any fasteners.

Good luck!
