Back on the hunt again. Looking at a 1998 Four a Winns with a Volvo Penta set up with 800 hours. Unsure on maintenance history right now but boat looks clean. Would a compression test be sufficient to gauge what life is left? Is this a good package vs the OMC?

It should go another 800hrs if it was and will be serviced properly definitely do a compression test and a run on the water make sure it holds its temp and the oil pressure is good letting us know what engine and drive it is would help although marine engines can last a long time they most often dont becuase of neglect and lack of maintaince its always risky buying a used boat but then again a new one can have problems to its just part of the game I would stay away from OMC if you can parts are not readily availible anymore athough I prefer merc volvo is just as good parts are just not as plentiful in some places

My opinion: The Volvo is the best drive going.
Post some pics. Any serial # s Model# drive type?

Stay away from ANY OMC's.

You can tell if a boats been maintained right by the appearance of the boat.
Look in the bilge and under the motor and the corners and the cabinets.
If you find crap from the last trip it probable it hasn't been taken care of.
Ask for service records and parts recently bought.
Yes do a compression test, go for a ride.

Post the info I asked for and we can give you more info.
