Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

Over the last weekend I managed to get all of the deck coated withe mat and a layer of cloth to finish it off. I have a few areas that I am not happy with (some ripples in the cloth) that I need to grind down and recoat. and some of the seams and corners are going to get a second layer on them.

I am also trying to find a suitable product for the cabin sole. I would like to use teak a holly ply but @ 215 a sheet ( I need 3) the finance dept (wife)shot that idea down. Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Wow looks good! I can't believe you had a Merc 260 in your Ray. I have a 75 SRV 190 and it has a Merc 260. Either yours was under powered or mine just has a lot of power. Haha

Pics are on my computer at home, work has sent me to Saskatoon for a couple of weeks. Before I left I did get all of th eglasing finished up and a coat of white paint in the bilge done.

I am still trying to find something for the sole, As well as fabric for the interior.

Yeah powered by a single 260 Hopefully it will cruise ok without sucking too much fuel in the process. besides that you can't go to slow trolling for salmon.

Finally home from Saskatoon with some time to work on the boat. Today was a milestone day for me the "new" engine is in connected and even got to crank it over. I think I can make out the light at the end of thr tunnel, of course I may just have something in my eye.

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

OK So I have had a chance to do some work
Get the engine in....Check
Align engine and install drive......check
test run engine at shop....check
rewire trim pump.....check
rewire trim tabs....check
rewire cabin/ nav lights.....check

What happens when I get to the lake today?
Well it floats its doesn't take on any water and it doesn't start.

So after 45 mins of trying to get it started I concede defeat and go back to get the truck, I get to the truck and to my surprise the trailer is now missing one bunk. Holy @%$& where did the other one go???

At this point I must state that the boat has not been off the trailer since I have owned it. I have done things such as rewire the lights and brakes , but never did it occur to me to check see that the bunks where secure.

So back to the ramp I go and sure enogh there is the bunk stuck to the hull of the boat. Hmmmmmm I think this should be easy to get back on the trailer now.

So long story long cold and wet story short I managed to retrive the errand bunk and get it back on the trailer and sercurly as well. Got the boat back to the shop. Where maybe tomorrow afternoon I will try and get it to run once more.

Now for some pictures

Going good so far

img0194.jpg

Still not so bad

img0200.jpg

Not doing very well at this point

And this one sums up my day.

Sucks that it did not start for you  Well on the brightside, it floats & is not taking on any water  best of luck.

Looking good...more on the bridge side, if it did run you would have surely lost the bunk or worse it may have hit the outdrive and caused damage.

I'm sure if it ran at the shop you'll have it figured out quickly. Good luck, I still have a long way to go to get mine in the water...I'm now hoping for August 1st. :(

Your'e right I would have been worse off had it started and lost the bunk. My Father In-law told me to look on the bright side "never did he think he could spend 2 hours on my boat and burn so little fuel" Regular comedian.

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

So, Hooked up the water lines at the shop today and jumped in. Hit the switch and she cranked really strong. Bumped the throttle a little and tried again. Then she fired right up. Let it run for about a 1/2 hour or so climbed back in and noticed that there was no oil presure on the gauges and that the volt meter was down. Now the oil presure gauge I believe to be the sending unit because the temps had stabilised and there were no bad sounds from anywhere, but the volt meter has me wondering if its not charging properly. Then when combined with running the blowers at the launch and flooding it I just wore down the batteries too much yesterday. Here at the shop it is plugged into a charger. So tomorrow I will try without the charger and see what happens.

That seems logical and simple enough. Either bad battery or alternator.

If the volt meter is down, does that mean that the oil sending voltage may be down too, sending a false signal. I'd check if you have oil getting to the valves, and troubleshoot that last. If you don't have oil flow, I'd imagine the valves would be quite dry after 30 min.

Good luck.

30 min's with out oil.. you'd know it.

I suspect weak charging system.. how old is the alternator? it would be worth it to take it off and have it tested... also how old is the battery??
have it tested as well.

the more I hear about stuff like this.. its pretty much convinced me to run dual batteries in my boat.. I can see myself out in the middle of the lake hanging out listening to the radio..for several hours.. and go to start it and guess what.. dead battery..(especially on a bigger boat)

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

I came in early this morning to test this out. Grab a multimeter to see what the alternator was putting out at the battery terminals at idle (700 rpm) I am getting 13.3 volts at 1000 rpm it jumps up to 14.4 volts but the gauge is reading low. I have another oil presure sending unit to swap in later today.

I have a spare alt that came off the old engine that is getting tested today so I'll have a good spare I don't know how old the batteries (there are two) are but the PO told me they were new ;).

So if the new sending unit gets some better results I'll see if I can't get it to the lake tomorrow after work.

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

I have had very little luck when it comes to checking alternators with a multi meter.. you just cant get good information, because you end up reading the battery voltage and the entire electrical system. and I have heard that you cant disconnect the alternator from the system and run it.. or you will damage the internal diodes.. (dont know if thats true)

best to take it off and run it into a shop.. but since you have a backup.
all the better

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

If you are getting 14 volts the alt is charging. 14.4 like you are reading is as high as you want the regulator in the alt to go. If any higher it will boil all the water from the electrolite in your battery and damage it.

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

Gotta love having the boat at work so I can tinker on coffee breaks :)

Put a new sending unit in and am now showing about 30 lbs of oil presure. Add to that the volt meter is now reading in the green, don't know about that maybe it was sticky from sitting so long??

Looks like I should be heading to lake tomorrow.

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

Ok so no lake today. By the time I got out to the boat(I was working on a jobsite today) I found the only rain in BC. I mean it was blowing sideways and 5 mins there puddles in the parking lot 3/4" deep and it dropped from 26 down to 17 within the same time. So with big black clouds rolling in I decided it wasn't going to happen.

On a better note I am more sure of my batteries being good now than I was before. I decided to test them as follows I ran the boat for about 15 mins then shut it down turned the cabin llights and radio on and went back to work, came back out 4 hours later and she started right up. Less impresive is how my spare alternator tested out. They called it a "paperweight" needing a complete rebuild but they can do that for $80 so its not that bad.

I also need to start thinking about paint now. I was going to use a marine enamel from my paint supplier because he could get me a geat deal on it, bit trying some sample ares out I can't get it to flow out very well. So I am now open to suggestions. The one caveat is that if its oil based I cannot spray it at work So roll and tip will probably be the way I have to go. That is unless somebody here knows of a good waterbased paint that could be used, because I can spray that.

Thanks.

Re: '80 Sea Ray 270 Sedan Bridge

Well family scheduling stopped me from taking her out this weekend but not from working on her. Got some more small items dealt with and also got the first coat of paint on the hull

The roll and tip went pretty well but you can easily tell where I started and where I finished. I had a much better technique at the end :) ( better than getting worse at it). So I'll be blocking a bunch of the first side down before the second coat. I also need to figure out what to do about the boat numbers, they are vinyl decals so if I roll the blue over them i should be able to peel them off to reveal the white underneath but I think that will be too light to be useful. Oh well if that doesn't work out I guess I will have to buy new decals ....... again.
