8 HP Johnson Long Shaft seizes in reverse

I have a J 8 Sail outboard (1998). When shifting into reverse, the motor seizes and the shift lever won't move. If I rotate the prop, the shift lever can move again but the same thing happens every time I shift into reverse. The motor runs fine in forward gear and idle. Any help would be appreciated.

When you say "seizes"..... Are you saying that when you shift into reverse, the engine actually comes to a screeching halt... seizes, jams, quits running.... or are you saying that you simply can't get the shift lever out of reverse?

I assume that this engine at one time did shift properly into reverse. If so, what may have been done if anything to the engine between then and now?

Sorry, missed the last part of your question...the motor has operated properly and has not had any recent repairs or incidents.

That indicates to me that something has gone wrong within the lower unit. Frankly I cannot imagine what, BUT I would suggest it (the lower unit) be dismantled for inspection.
