Good score on the nice warm place to work on the project for the winter. Bet you can't wait to get started.

Nice stand and setup in the garage. Looks like you are ready to roll over the winter.

It's snowing like crazy here and mine will soon be under a pile of snow :) I should have bought a house with a bigger garage.

Thanks Sprint, all systems go for round II of the resto.:)

Nice storage/shop space for her HA. Sorry to hear the weather's so bad... it's only 29 degrees (C) here today... :(

TII

What's that like 80 Farenheit? Thanks for putting up with that weather, somebody's gotta do it.

WOW HA!! That's a great work-space!! Mine is shoved in a 2-car garage without much room to move, but it works..

I sure am lucky to have scored this setup, and I got a great deal too since I haven't paid for anything;) My buddy has more than compensated for the Bluegill under the deck incident.:D

Great workshop man!:D

Thanks Jason, plenty of room in there in case you buy a couple more boats this winter eh!

Thanks Glen, yeah it's pretty well-insulated so no trouble keeping it over 50 degrees. If I get to work and keep at it that's plenty warm for me to wear a sweatshirt.

I got outbid on a Mercury lift ring, dangit. Need to get that motor pulled.

You guys think I should wait for a proper lifting ring or just pull it with what we've got laying around, chains, and lots of rope?

Well my friend, I am glad you have the room for my additional "boats". But I gotta say if I am involved in that sort of behavior I hope there is room for me in there too:eek:

I'll bring my sleeping bag:D

HA, I lifted my 135 Merc without a ring. I wrapped rope around the motor and lower unit and was careful not to pinch anything that may break. Then is attached a chain to the rope. You shouldn't have a problem if you distribute the weight and use common sense.
Congrats on the work shop, I wonder if the 'gill' will smell it up???

Yah, I am with Dale there - I wouldn't let a eye hold you up from taking that motor off. A careful job of wrapping a keeper tow strap will do the trick I think (balance the weight).

Tell ya what, this has been totally awesome for my project...

I think I got mine even cheaper than that. I don't know why I have gone on for so long without it!:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Yeah I've been debating this for a while and we have enough rope and chains to make it work so I will opt for not using the lift ring and see how it goes.

I have a 1-ton semi winch strap that will add some peace of mind while it's hanging. No rush so we will go the overkill route.

If the motor drops and breaks then I will have a good parts motor but would probably switch to a Johnnyrude:p

I am planning on spending some time tomorrow working on unhooking everything so we can move forward on this.

Hey man, don't be making space for any extra jasoutside boats in there either!

If you are making space it should be for a Huron Angler Islander!:D

I have a universal lifting ring. I used it to lift a 150 Evinrude and it hung from it for a month or more....

Should work with the merc too. And should cost much to ship. You can borrow it if you want, and then just send it back to me when you are done.

It's not a homeade job either. It's made just for this.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

How'd you go?
TII

Hey TII how are things down your way? Isn't it summer down there? Hope you have been able to splash the alloy rig and enjoy it:D

No progress to report, lots of family time and busy weekends. One of the downsides of storing the rig off-site is that I can't step out and tinker whenever I have a minute or two.

I knew this going into it, and I plan on getting things ready to start working in about two weeks.

Getting that Merc pulled is top priority and I spoke to my mobile marine mechanic about taking a look at it this winter the other day.

All good here and yes it's summer. However, we've had so much rain I can't believe it. All our reservoirs are full and they've had to dump water for the first time in decades. Hoping to get plenty of boat time over Christmas. :D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I am glad to say that we managed to get the 80hp Merc lifted off the transom and she's sitting nicely on the motor stand.

We made a gantry of sorts to make things easy. I lowered the bow, attached 4 cables/ropes to the motor, removed all bolts and loosened clamps...and then raised the bow, allowing the motor to swing free.

The process went pretty smoothly and the stand didn't collapse, the outboard wasn't dropped etc so I am happy.:D

I can easily remove the CMC trim/tilt bracket now and get to work on removing the transom.

I already have been removing snap fittings, rails, cleats, fake wood step pads etc for the second time at that. Progress and photos will be on the way.:)

Great to hear the removal went off without a problem Mike. I am curious as to the condition of the wood. Are still going to have the motor serviced while you have it off or are you doing it yourself?

The wood is in very good shape. The only reason I'm replacing it is because it seems to be pressure-treated, there are a few unneccesary holes in it, and I want to make sure I don't have corrosion problems underneath from the chemicals in the wood.

I am pretty sure that it will be nice, clean, bare aluminum underneath...but who knows until we take a look.:)

I need to do a better job sealing the splashwell too since the previous restorer has used regular sillycone and it does not work well at all. Some 5200 will do much better.

I spoke to my local mobile marine mechanic and he says he can help rebuild the carbs and go through the outboard for a VERY reasonable rate($40/hour).

He is also ok with me hanging out and learning how to do this all myself, and he's got 30 years experience on all types of outboards.

So I may take a crack at it myself and then also have him look at it as well.:)

No sign of that little one:eek::D I'm not lifting the bow deck anytime soon so that surprise will be for some lucky person in 30-40 years(they will also be wondering about the pool noodles):D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I neglected to mention that while unhooking the motor I used a nice trick that I believe Bob_VT helped me with(although it may have been another SC brother).

We got the power, throttle, shift, and gas lines unhooked from the outboard, then lifted the motor and it was WAY easier to get the finicky steering cable out.

It would have surely bent the rod if I had done this prior to lifting the Merc off the transom, since the steering rod was too long to clear.

Anyone who has done this will know what I mean. It worked great and I recommend this method to anyone that needs to pull a motor.:)

Not sure if I will get to work on the rig today, I have some last-minute shopping to do.

Merry Christmas to all you nice folks.:D
