I have a 1979 Evinrude 200HP with the original controls; everything has been running tip-top as usual; however, I've done a bit of striper trolling this season (as usual) and all of a sudden between one neutral and forward shift the throttle portion became extremely difficult to move. I was still able to continue fishing and using some pressure later got it up on plane and back to the dock, no problems.

Just wondering if this is a lubrication issue inside the control box?

Again. It is shifting fine: neutral, forward, neutral, reverse. It is just when trying to put the throttle down it requires more force than should be required.

Thank you for any help.

It could be inside the box, but also could be be that the friction knob has been moved; it's just below the ignition key. Try turning it counter-clockwise to loosen.

It could also be that one of the cables has been bent.

See if there is too much drag on the warm-up lever when you raise it; that only moves the throttle cable, so if that is OK, the problem may be confined to the shift cable.

imho being a 1979 either bushing in control, or worn out throttle cable.

Try disconnecting the cables at the engine and see if they move freely when shifted. You may have to take the box apart and disconnect the cables at the box, too, then try to move the cables by hand to check for binding.
