79 evinrude 15hp has no forward

working on a 1979 evinrude 15hp motor. has been running good. all of a sudden it will not shift in to forward. reverse works just fine. had to run 2 miles in reverse to get home.

Bolt come out of the shift rod connector?
Any metal in the lower unit oil?

shift rod seems to be functioning properly don't know about metal in oil,what would that mean?

Check all of your shift linkage from top to bottom. You will have to pull the lower unit to check the bottom linkage.

check also that the 2 screws are tight and 1 isn't missing where the shift interlock bolts to the block

checked to see if all shift linkage was connecteded and it is . rod is moving up and down with shifting lever.

id be checking the lower unit gear oil like daviet suggested metal would indicate failure of the forward gears

Did you by any chance try to drain/change lower unit gear oil & may have taken out the wrong screw? If so this Phillips head screw is the shifter yoke pivot screw, & could be your cause if you did not get it back in right.
