79 evinrude 140 starter acting up

My starter is not engaging the fly wheel. I have a brand new bat. The starter is lubed up. It spins and
Makes a little contact, but then spins down. The teeth are a little worn. Should I replace the worn gear? Thanks for your help.

The battery may be new -- but is it fully charged?? No -- replacing the bendix is not likely going to solve the problem. Does it rotate/slide freely by hand?? And clean the oil off the shaft as it only causes things to get gummy as it attracts dirt and moisture. A starter that has bad/worn brushes can cause the starter to spin too slowly. That can also be due to corroded battery cables. Disconnect, thoroughly clean (as in shiny bright) and reconnect. And those cables have two ends so doing the battery end is only 1/2 the job.

Try jumper cables direct to the starter from a fresh battery. If the starter cranks the engine over at normal speed, I'd have a close look at the starter solenoid. If the starter does not spin it normally, follow Silvetip's suggestion regarding the starter.
