76 mark twain mercruiser 5.0 engine with merc888

i replaced the broken shift cable going down to the lower unit
i have forward and neutral but no reverse..i have a service manual download
but i cant figure out how to adjust the cable,i dont really understand how it works
can anyone help me out?

Ayuh,... Did you split the lower unit from the upper unit,..??

If so,... My guess is, you didn't have everything in Forward when you put 'em together, 'n are now 1 spline Off...

sorry but im not sure what u mean by...did you split the lower unit from the upper???
i removed the 6 nuts and pulled what i thought was the lower end ..correct me if im wrong
and what do u mean that i may be off 1 spline..are u talking about the double ushafted spline shaft ?
sorry i dont know much about boats but do know how to work on stuff

Ayuh,... You pulled the Outdrive,...
It consists of an Upper unit, 'n the Lower unit...

Why don't you tell Us, Exactly how you replaced the cable, 'n WHICH cable...

ok i pulled the outdrive all in one unit...i removed the 6 nuts and pulled her out
with that off i could remove the shift cable outer sleave and cable it self ... then re installed everything
and i do not have reverse and when going into forward it seems like i have to put the shift lever a lil to far forward before it engages

ok thanks i will make sure i have mine all the way in...
with the lowerend off the boat is there a way to check it ? move the lever one way for reverse and the other for forward or isnt that easy ?

nope not asking for someone to do it for me smart ***..i was asking about WITH THE LOWEREND OFF THE BOAT CAN IT BE DETERMIND IF REVERSE AND FORWARD WORK..LIKE MOVE THE LEVER ONE WAY AND SPIN THE PROP,VISVERSA ..JUST A SIMPLE QUESTION
and yes i do have the service manual it ficken sucks..good for some things and horible for others
i apricate your guys help so far ..just looking for further help

Simple Answer,...

If the manual directions are followed, through-out the process of the cable installation,...
Everything should fall into place....

With the Outdrive off the boat, In Forward, the shift foot will be Straight fore, 'n aft...

With the controller in Forward, the shift shoe will be Straight fore, 'n aft....
Just like it says in the Manual.....
