76 Evin 85hp Power Pack??

I've got an intermitent (most of the time) "no start" that's driving me nuts. The part that has me puzzeled is that when using a digital multimeter set to 20ma touching between ground and cyl#3 sensor wire from the Timing base, it fires up almost every time and runs great until I shut it down. Then it won't start again until I use the multimeter on cyl#3 again. I am getting about a 4ma reading on all 4 sensor wires feeding the Power Pack while cranking. So my question is, how does the power pack work and is it my problem? Any ideas?

Thanks to this site for the troubleshooting page. It turned out to be the Timing Base. Runs great now.
