Motor shifts hard from neutral...what could be the reason for this?

A bit more description of your symptom would be helpful. You mean the control takes extra effort to move it out of neutral when the engine's running?

Has it been like this since you got the motor, or it's harder now than it was last time you had it out?

Done any recent maintentance?

The motor has done this since I got it last year. Have not done any maintenance.

What happens is when shifting into gear from neutral theres almost a grinding, similar to when you try to shift a manual car without using the clutch.

I don't know if it does it going into reverse or not, because I've never used reverse.
