I am looking at getting a 75 slickcraft ss194 with a 165hp I/o. Owner clams last season he was using it and the sterndrive locked up. Motor won’t turn over and can’t move the prop either way. Boat looks in pretty good shape and priced right at $500. My question is are the stern drives easy to come by and reasonably price.

Pull the drive to see if the engine turns before buying it. Drive is easy to do but if engine is locked up turns more costly. Did yiu check for stringer transom and floor rot?

Haven’t looked at it yet. it’s a 3hr drive away. Going to be in the area next weekend. Hoping to look then. Owner says when he fits the key starter engages and when he lets go the engine rocks a little so I’m hopeful it is just the sterndrive.

I will reiterate what was stated above. pull the drive and check BEFORE you buy.

Basically a 50 yr old boat that doesn’t run, should be free if you haul it away. Would suspect for a few bucks more you can find something running and less obsolete in terms of drivetrain. This would ultimately be cheaper to get water ready

would depend on condition imo. A nice old boat that is well kept but had an outdrive lock up on the water could actually be a bargain. With the condition of seals and such, running an outdrive to the point that happens without being noticed is plausible, especially if the gear oil ended up in the bellows where it’s not visible.

That said, if the engine is locked up. 165s were not as common as V8s and the 4cyls so the entire value hinges on a locked up outdrive, which is $500 used pretty much anywhere ( bring a modified bike pump to pressure test before purchase)
…. This is all provided that the boat is sound and in good usable shape

If you decide to buy it. One thing not to over look.
Trailer tires, axle, frame & wheel bearings.
Lift up each wheel and spin it. You should not hear nothing. The tires will probably need replacing also.
