I was doing some research yeasterday on my 15hp Johnson and came across a web page that said there is a conversion kit that I can change my points over to CDI. Is that true and if so could someone point me in the right direction.

Hi Xeenan. While they do make conversion kits, I'm not sure why you'd want one? Most folks here actually prefer the older points/magento style system due to their due to their reliability and ease of maintenance. Not to mention the cost. New points and condensers are only about $15 and can be changed in about 20 min.

Re: 75 15hp Johnson Points to CDI Conversion?

Hello there, take a look at my 1975 9.9 below on my boat:
This engine has a 15hp carb and power head upgrade, but I retained the points because all the post 1976 9.9/15 engines I have owned always had power pack failures, whereas the points on the 9.9 are original and have never let me down in the 30+ years I've used it.
Thus a CDI type conversion would actually be a downgrade in terms of reliability, and costly too because you need a difierent stator, coils, power pack, and flywheel.

Water and heat are killers for CDI systems but they do run for 15-20 years without failure sometimes longer to my knowledge. Points can run forever but they too have their weaknesses and can fail.

If the mechanical parts show no wear and no oil-leakage from upper crank shaft seal - leave it as is. However if the armature plate starts getting play in the bearing area and oil starts seeping from the seal, it might be time to think about conversion.
