I recently acquired a 16' SuperSport from my grandpap. This boat has been in the family longer then I have been. some of my earliest boating/fishing memories were on this boat. It has been sitting in his back yard for 11 years since i had last used it my senior year of school.

the summer i had used it i put in a new floor and vinal on the seats, i had used scrap material just so i could get on the water for the summer. most of what i had done was not very thorough.

my goals here are to get this boat looking great and back on the water on a regular basis.

This is the first time ive tried to blog out a project on a forum so ill try to do my best to keep this current as to my progress.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

here are a few pics from before i started, these arent the greatest pics but they should give you an idea.

DSCN1209.jpg

A front view, from a distance is just looks a little dusty, but looking closer most parts need some attention to get to where i would like it to be.

the front seat boards are half rotted, and are quite soft, i stepped on 1 and went right through it.
DSCN1213.jpg

the back had an old seat from a conversion van that my grandpap installed because he wanted a comfortable seat, while comfortable, seat is heavy and made the boat sit crooked in the water. so it has to go.(plus its ugly)

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

I have most of the interior gutted out, the front rails is also removed, and the transom boards are about half the way out. half way meaning all the screws are out, but still trying to get the rotted board to budge.

the floring while it looks somewhat ok is quite soft. the boards are just sitting there to make standing in it easier.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

the worst part of this project is probally the motor. it has a 74 65hp merc that when it was used last it ran for a few minuted then died. has some tests done and there was one of the cylinders that was very low on compression. the shop took one of the covers off the motor and never put it back on so i think its lost.

im not sure if im goign to try to rebuild that or look for a different OB closer to 85hp to make this little boat zip across the water.

for right now i left the motor at a different location so i can focus on the boat for now.

there is also a 6hp johnson that runs well, but needs some new gaskets in the lower end.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

the other part is the trailer that is goign to need some work. the weekend i brought it home i spent 2 days working on it to make it road worthy to make the trip from PA to MN. right now it needs paint, new bunk boards and brackets and new rollers.

ill tackle this part when i pull the boat off the trailer to paint the haul.

i just need to decide the colors i want to go with.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

so ending the work tonight i have everything out of the boat, all the rails are off and the transom is half out.

tomorrow i need to find some PT ply for the new transom board, and get the boat off the trailer to start sanding.

Wow! Cool Supersport! Welcome Aboard & Come on in to the exclusive Starcraft club that is quietly taking over iboats!

You don't want to use the PT plywood...Has a copper based chemical agent that interacts BADLY with aluminum..As in corrodes...

Enjoy your project and keep us updated, your doing a great job..

Nice boat, another starcraft:D I am in the middle of a starcraft resto as well, feel free to as questions.
I agree with Kev on avoiding pressure treated ply. Use exposure 1 AC grade and encapsulate in epoxy resin. I used a 6" roller to apply it to the underside and endgrain of the ply before installing it, then rolled on 2 coats on the top after it was in place.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

Thanks for the tip on the plywood.

I had one question that i have read many different posts on, but not sure the best way to go. I need to replace a good amount of the foam under the deck. alot of it is broken up and rather brittle. and there is some that is water logged and looks to be stained with oil/gas residue.

I dont really want to use the puor in foam as i think it creates a mess and would be a pain if i ever had to get under that floor again. i know i want closed cell foam so it doesnt soak up the water, but do you all have any recommendations on the best thing to use?

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

No Problem..Glad to help as others have helped me..

You can use the pink closed cell foam from the big DIY centers.
You can cut it to fit easily and will allow any water to flow past it rather than being a big sponge..

You can use the "search" toll up on the top of the screen right south west of WELCOME, xxxxxx..

Type in "Foam replacement" or any other question that you may have and chances are there will be a highly informative thread with pics of a project that went through the exact issue you have.

Not to stir a debate up, and please do what makes you feel safe, but there has been debates on whether foam is really necessary. It's primary purpose is to add flotation if you become swamped, it doesn't add extra bouyancy sitting in the water.

DS welcome to iboats and the Starcraft club :D. The foam most of us are using in our tinny's is the pink foam board you can get at homie desperate or Lowes it comes in 4X8 sheets and differant thicknesses and can be cut into strips pretty easy.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

Okay strip the hull out, gluvit the seams and rivets, use some pink board foam and some swim noodles......

What was wrong with that old conversion van seat? That color was popular back in the day!!

What kind of power are you planning on.....????? More than that small kicker we see in the corner?

Lets get moving....there are fish waiting!! ;)

Well its quite weathered and i dont have a matching one for the other side, LOL

the haul is stripped, i just need to clean it out and then hit it with the gluvit(had already planned that one that)

there was some standing water under the floor so im goign to pull it out and hose it down this afternoon. and then start sanding the exterior haul.

im searching around for a new power source, the original 65hp merc needs alot of work and in the sake of getting on the water sooner then later i'm looking around for something else. when i find something ill be sure to add it in here. i'd like to find an 75-85 evinrude, i may just but a newer one, but then it wouldnt match the vintage of the boat. well see what i find first. and what is left in my budget as well. haha

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

The underbelly was in very nice condition, just a little scrubbing needed to clean out some water stains.
Picture006.jpg

there is some surcace gunk on the inside of the stern aluminum where the transom board was. any recomendation on what to use to clean this off? after cleaning it is there something i should use to seal the aluminum, or would primer work?
Picture009.jpg

got it off the trailer, would have to say getting it off by myself was easy, trying to move it afterwards was a challange until my neighbor got home.

Picture010.jpg

the underbelly was in great condition also, no major dings or scratches. just need to scuff up the paint, remove the old stickers and get moving with the new paint.

Re: 74 Starcraft Resto Project

now that the boat is off the trailer i can see its condition a little better. mainly alot of surface rust and pealing paint. one of the weel wells is rusted out and is actually falling off so it looks like ill have to get some new wheel wells.
Picture003.jpg

Picture001.jpg

all of the rollers were in this condition, cracked, ant the pin was rusted and bent. probally in part that the bunk boards were not set at the right height so all the weight was on the rollers.
