Well, I did it, I traded my 17' Sea Ray for the one in my sig. He thought the motor was froze up because it had gas in the oil pan.

Turned ou to be the fuel pump8)

Anyone else out there?.....JK

Hmm, someone else with one of these !

Picked up a 1973 SRV 220 888, 188 Mercruiser, last year but only had her out a dozen times or so. The thing runs well, although I am not experienced enough yet to trade performance issue stories. I had to perform a few minor operations to ready it for water and I hope to run it most of the coming spring and summer. Got lucky and ended up with two copies of Mercruiser service manual #1 books 1 & 2 so I feel better equipped to explore more deeply. Dont have any decent pics yet, but perhaps we can peruse this crappy cell phone camera shot of the engine.......

Me too!

I just bought a 1973 SRV220 from a boat donation place. It's got some scratches and dents but supposedly runs. I have a few pictures at:

http://www.greendragon.org/boat/

Although the trailer looks like hell, the hull is scratched, and the interior is dated, it supposedly runs, including the water pump, and was in use in the 2006 season.

I am learning slowly about the boat. The engine is supposed to be decent, although this model (302 ford) has issues with heat, coil problems, and blowing head gaskets. There are a lot of bolt-on accessories, although the engine has over 1000 hours on it so I may get a rebuild on it before anything else. The hull seems to be solid non-cored FRP, so no rot there. The deck over the fuel tank seems to have been redone at some point, and is rotted partially.

I'll replace the deck, put a new coil in, and maybe put in electronic ignition.

I'm going to work on the interior and take out most of the old seating/carpeting/headliner, to put in benches for divers and storage for a sonar unit. I can't work on the engine/outdrive till spring, but if either one craps out I'm prepared to replace or rebuild them.

I'm told the boat has a WOT rpm of around 4200, and may do about 40 mph, but that's someone's guess.

Looking forward to hearing about your SRV 22x boats,

Erik

1000 hours is not alot for that engine......
You just need to do some diagnostic work to see its true condition......
Do you have the dash mounted vacuum gauge?
They are great!......
It will do 35-39 if it is running well......
These boats are underpowered with a 188, but they are hardy motors......
I don't know how many hours mine has 'cuz there is no hour meter......
But it still runs well......
I bought a 351 off ebay, that is next winter's project.......:)

'72 SRV 21' Closed Bow

'72 SRV 21' Closed Bow

I'm about to get my hands on my dads 1972 Sea Ray SRV ? No cuddy closed bow. Lots of room! It's got a 188 Merc that's running strong, but no hours meter. My buddies and I kicked around the idea of throwing a bigger power plant in there but I'm wondering if the boat itself can handle it.

How can I check for dry rot or structural weakness?

Second - what are my options? I've heard you can't put car motors in boats because they're not built for low end torque. Plus I'm more interested in fishin so trolling and economy is a big deal. I'd like to just rebuild the engine and give it some added power for pulling a skier with a load. (Won't get out of the hole if I have big boys in the back.) I've used two diff props but we just canned one last year on a sand bar. Now I'm stuck with 19 pitch.

Also, does anyone know where they're some pictures of interiors? I'm fixing up the upholstery and dash and just wondering what my options are.

Thanks

Welcome to iboats......:)
The only step up would be to go to a 351....
You will need to change some of the exhaust parts & maybe the engine cover....
The 351 is 2" taller & 2" wider......
You could get a 4 barrel intake & carb & potentially get 235 hp out of it....
Check the compression #'s, that will tell you the engines condition....;)
My 888 is a '73 & still runs well, but I am going to put a351 in it this winter......:D

Re: '75 SRV 220 Cuddycabin

Re: '75 SRV 220 Cuddycabin

Hey, I'm new at this, so please bear with me. I have had a 1975 SRV 220 Cuddycabin for about 11 years. Still runs great and am always getting compliments on it. I have been unable to locate the filler neck and the sending unit on the 70 gal. v-bottom belly fuel tank on this boat. Does anyone out there have a clue where these are? I don't really want to tear up my deck!

72 srv 180 Love it. Turning it to a open bow fishing machine. About ready to really really unload some pics really soon about the progress. I made a new dash and all from glass. Used the thin foam that you can get a lowes to glass around. I cant wait for next spring. Its going to be a BRAND SPANKING NEW 72' srv 180, only with a open bow and a lot of fishing extras!!

Hey thats a pretty good deal in my opinion. I got a 1976 srv 220 too, a few months ago. Its exactly like yours but all while with a blue waterline. Ill try and get some pictures. From what i could see your boat is in good condition. Your trailer is in much better shape than mine. Good luck!

i've also got my eye on a 1973 srv 220....aside from a dated interior, everything seems to work fine in it, except for that it is needing an engine coupler soon.
i'm a ford guy so i'm glad it has the 888 setup

Hi there, my name is Jojo and I'm here in Toronto I've been following your boat restoration since last year I saw your post on the web when I just bought exactly the same boat, I wish you are just a drive away from my place because I need a lot of advice from people like you who got talent and skill in restoring boats you've really done a good job on that boat. This is my third boat my first boat was just a 14 footer 1975 aluminum run a-about boat with an old outboard motor which I used fishing inlakes with an old outboard motor then one time a friend of mine who has a deep hull boat invited me to go salmon fishing here in lake Ontario and since then I forgot inlake fishing and sold my first boat and bought a used 21 footer cutter run a-bout 6 cylinder merc. 165 hp. which I used for 5 years then just sold it again last year and bought this 1973 searay srv220 I really like this boat and I got a lot of things in my mind how I would like it set up for salmon fishing at lake Ontario right now I strip all the cushion inside and the side panelling and brought it to an upholstery shop I know your's you were the one who did it but there is no way I can do that I wish I could because it cost me $1500.00, the engine I had it fix as soon as I got the boat last fall and it cost me $1300.00, then my wife want's a full top that extends from the hard top which I really don't like because it will restrick my movement when we are realling a salmon but I have to go with it or else everything will be shut off with this boat you know what I mean. Anyway can you please tell me where can I buy the original running light of this boat the one that extends to the roof of the hardtop the pole of the running light is leanning in the middle of the windshield it's about a 4ft. pole that leans on the windshield and bends a little bit on top of the roof I still have the pole but bulb housing is gone and can't just replace it with another housing because of the shape of the original one. Thank you and good luck to your boat restoration.

Re: '73 SRV 220 Model 888

you should be able to find a new light for it on here, or possibly just by searching online. I think mine was replaced before and the PO just used a length of Auminum tubing and fastened some light to the top of it
