Nice project tgp, not sure how I missed this one:)

You are a step ahead of the game with swapping another Merc in there, hope you can find a 4.3 for a good price:D

Looking forward to seeing how she turns out!

Re: 72' Starcraft Islander

Yes I got some time to work on it and get something done. With the motor out, I was able to remove the all the stuff mounted to the transom, not sure wahat it's all called (bellows, steering, hydraulics) but I'll learn in time. Steering and dash off, the wire harness is off too. there will be lots of projects for winter, when the snow is deep and days are short and cold.

I think my goal is to get it stripped and off the trailer. I hope i remeber how it all goes back together. Eventually I need to find a motor and gas tanks. There a alot of inline 6's around here right now. But I think I might want to stay with a 140.

Question.....this boat had Bennett trim tabs on it....Why, if the boat had trim and tilt to begin with? Do I want to see if they work and re-install them or fill the holes and not even bother w/ them. Seems redundant.

Next up, windshield and all the little do-dads. I going to need a break soon though, the Nassau feeling neglected.

Re: 72' Starcraft Islander

I got home early from work today so .... I of course went to work on the boat right away...Wife and daughter feeling neglected lately, all week I've gotten home from work and right away head outside to continue the dismantlement of boat. My goal being, to get it all stripped and flipped before the end of next week (taking the wife up to Door county for a weekend away. Daughter will be dropped off at the wifes folks and we party like animals (still can throw down with best of them at 52.... when I have a mind to) in Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin). Not going to happen, I just won't get the boat off the trailer and the flipped befor the end of next week... Not sure yet on my plan for flipping the boat. But oh well, moving on......

Here is a photo of how I removed the the top of the Islander. I put a pipe under the top after removing all the rivets, bolts and the like. Rolled it back and lifted it down by myself.

Pulled the transom. After the photo I picked it up and it fell apart from the rot.
100_2172.jpg

Still have the bow cap to take off, The bow support is rotted too, the windshield, and front window needs lots of work too. Lots of questions will come this winter, I'm sure.

Next is to build some sawhorses and get off the trailer and flipped. Then I think it will sit for a while. I have some other honey do projects that need attention. hope everyone enjoys the photo's. I have not put up a lot photo's this restore. Lots of things going on these days. Its hard to keep the postup to date.

Yes, I feel I made progress. No work on it today though, pouring rain, and it looks like it'll be around for a while. I need to tgo to town anyway.

I need something to take the old contact cement off the inside of the boat. Notice how its all over the sidewalls and trays. KleanStrip makes an adheasive remover.

Also need some 2x4's, I will attach across the boat hull to make it rigid for when I attemp to flip it.

Re: 72' Starcraft Islander

Well I just checked the price of aluminum. $0.68/pound. As I sit and ponder, why do I do the things I do. I suddenly realize there is roughly $400 in aluminum, stripped and ready for the scrap heap, sitting in the back yard. Along w/ a trailer easily sold for $125 as is, 4 down riggers 2w/booms a couple hundred there at least, a Mercruiser drive say another $125, and a seized 140 maybe $100 If I parted it out. Why again am I doing this?? I could net $800 easy with not much more work.

I need a beer ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
ok, I need another beer................................................................................................................................

What color do you think I should paint it??:D

Re: 73' Starcraft Islander

I just received my title in the mail. I had to fill out the lost title application for the PO then the title transfer. Looks like I'll have to change the title of my thread from 72' Islander to 73' Islander. As the Title has it as a 1973.

Re: 72' Starcraft Islander

Well, I maybe calling it quits on this Islander.

I made some time to take my Nassau out and had a really good time. 2 boats maybe more than I need. I'm finding it harder to find time to work on it lately and the Nassau at this time seems to be plenty of boat for as often as I get to use it.

I'll probly CL, it and see if I get any bites. Most likely part it out. I should come smelling like a rose though, as I'm in it for a song and a dance (and a lot of dirty work).

The wife has projects lined up for me, I don't know if I'll have time to deal with it till spring. Bathroom remodel here I come.:(

Ah carp, I hope she doesn't find her way to the scrapper. They don't even build these Islanders any more. Rats.

Yes, I know. I hate to see it go too, but 1 boat is enough. I don't even have time to use my little 66' Nassau. work, wife, kid, just not enough time to devote myself to another boat, excuse me, ship, right now. I did some research, yes, I believe the islander could qualify as a ship! how cool is that! We'll see what happens. I'm so busy right now I don't have time to sell it, or haul it to the recycler. I'll put it on CL and see if someone bites.

I still have the Nassau, and that thing is a blast! There is still some things to do to that one. I still have'nt figured out the tachometer issue.

Twoboatitis, is a terrible disease. I don't know how you guys do it, or where you find the time.

Bummer. 1800 mile round trip in the f250 = $750 in gas. Good luck with CL.

I feel your pain.....Listed it. We'll see what happens. I even put the seized engine on CL for a $100, and had a call on that last night.

Maybe winter will come and I'll be forced to keep it till spring.

Hi Guys,
Don't mean to be rude but I'm new to this forum and trying to figure out how to post a question to this forum and I've had zero luck with reading their instructions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
