I just pulled the flywheel. I was playing around seeing how stuff works and noticed the speed control/stearing handle has play it it. If I turn it counter clockwise to the start point. Then turn it clockwise, I can move almost half a turn before anything moves. On my 72 johnson 9.5, everything thing moves when I turn the handle. My manual dosnt say anything about this part. Is there a sper gear or something in the handle that my be slipping?

I had that happen on my 9.5. The teeth on the tiller handle gear became mis aligned . I had to take the tiller handle off realign them and reattach the tiller handle . It was pretty simple. I think I posted on here about it. So there's a thread on here somewhere.

Yep, the gear teeth only go about half way around on the shaft that's in the handle. It's a rack and pinion affair. You have to remove the handle and get it all "timed" properly.

If the gears need realign/timed. How do I go about doing that? How would I know if they are where they should be. I got the break down from the link that tashasdaddy gave. So if I need new gears I know where to get them. I just need to know how to get them aligned right. Thanks.

I don't know if yours is like mine. Mine is a 65. But if you tilt the tiller in the up position you can see how the gears align with the rack and link. When you twist the grip you can see how they move and where they are not catching. You have to take the shaft out and realign.
