Sure sounds like a clutch dog, doesn't it? However, I have never seen a worn out dog on one of those motors. But then again, I guess it has had time to do it by now.

Disconnect the blue and green wires beside the powerhead that go down to the lower unit. That takes everything out of the picture. Then see if it still jumps (careful, it will be defaulted to forward gear when you start it). If it jumps with the wires disconnected, the problem is in the lower unit.

Re: 71' johnson 60hp thunking in forward

thank you f r that helped alot! so now... i took apart the propshaft. model 60esl70b. the gears are pretty worn (rounded not sharp) the shift dog is really worn bad on both sides the new question is: does the shift dog pin go all the way through the propshaft hole as one piece? i was able to slide the dog (the spring did resist) so i was able to see the entire circle where that pin should have went through. i did not take that spring off that holds the dog shift pin. still frustrated fishbasket

The spring holds the shift dog pin in place, just peel the spring off of the clutch dog and the pin will slide out. Do you have a manual for this engine? If not you may want to pick one up. The manual is very helpful and ansewers a lot of questions.
