Hey guys, I just inherited a boat with a 70hp Evinrude. The boat has been out of commision for 10yrs. just sitting with a makeshift shelter for protection. I don't want to evin spin the starter before talking with someone that is more experienced than I. What can I expect as far as problems that might occur as a result of the engine not being used for ten years? What precautions should I take prior to cranking? Should I rebuild or put a new gasket set in the entire engine? What is the proper proceedure in this paticular situation? Thanks for any comments and help. PS: The motor was running good when it was last used.

expect your carbs to be dirty and likely need rebuilding, not a hard job for anyone with some mechanical ability,if the boat has a built in gas tank, you want to empty it of old gas,you need to flush all gas lines with clean fuel, you will need to change the waterpump impeller and lowerunit gear oil,you might be able to fire it up not changing impeller ,but i dont suggest it because the rubber breaks and can be pushed into the waterways,i would also spray some fogging fluid into the cylinders in event its a bit stuck, the carbs and impeller are really the biggies for a motor that laid up,you can do a spark and compression test ,that will give some idea where the eng is ,of course you need spark gas and compression for it to run,but gas will be the problem because its the nature of the beast, a sitting eng will get a varnish buildup in the carbs especially for fuel was not run out or treated, but even gas treated can become trouble, you want a good battery, clean connections,i believe there is a topic on layed up engines, but if you do carbs and impeller, crnk it up see from there,be sure no bugs made nests in any waterpassages in lowrunit

+1 on everything above and I would spray a shot of deep creep into every spark plug hole and with the plugs out turn the motor by hand.

Make sure you have the right manual to change the impeller..... IF it is electric shift there are additional steps.

I would remove the carbs and sparks plugs..and spay generously deep creep into plug holes and into the intake manifold all over the rods and bearings...marvel mystery oil is also a great choice and but will not decarb the motor like the deep creep. Maybe use the oil first then use the deep creep for a decarb. Turn the motor over by hand at the fly wheel till it frees up..then spin it over with the starter while spraying more oil into your intake/carbs..then go through the spark test and compression test.

o yea, probably all of your fuel/vacuum lines will need replacing. Check all of your wiring also for corrosion.
