Trying to seperate the lower unit from motor, can't see how to release the shift rod, this is a Model# 70ESL 74 M, thanks?

Watch under the carburetors while you operate the shifter. You will see the mechanism lifting the shift rod up and down. A bit of study will reveal how it is pinned. They vary from model to model. Easier for you to just look than for us to go to the books. In most cases you need a 7/16" flex socket on a long extension.
