I got the MPI engine dropped in last weekend. I hooked everything back up, turned the key, let the fuel pump prime then started the engine. It fired right up. Turned the key to shut it down... Nothing.. it kept running, I pulled the coil wire to kill it. Tested the ignition switch and it's fine. Looked online and found a little info that pointed to the altenator. I disconnected the field wire(red/purple) from the balmar 91-150 -D restarted and the engine now shuts off with the key. Any one have insight on this problem, could the diodes be fried, maybe a voltage regulator problem.
Thanks again in advance.

Solved
This alternator needs an external voltage regulator.

It shouldn't if (there are 2 IF's)

If this is a Mercruiser, the ALT needs a feed from the purple wire to the field side (exciter), and also needs full time 12V on the Stator Red/Purple)

If this is a Mercruiser it does not have a feed which back feeds the Purple wire, only Volvo Penta does this

The engine is a mercruiser.
The tech at balmar was the one that said it needed a external voltage regulator of course they want $300 plus for the recommeded one. Plus if you are correct I have the wires backwards. But what will the alt output be without a voltage regulator. The mercruiser alt have an internal regulator.

without a voltage regulator it will run wild ,possible up to 40 volts best to get a standard alt with the built in regulator
