6hp 1986 Evinrude Yachtwin won't run

One of our kids bought this motor in Key West from a boat that capsized in a storm this spring. The boat owner had inherited it on his new used sail boat....post sinking it would try to turn over but wouldn't run. Cleaned the carb finally got it running, put it in the water... wouldn't run out of idle in forward or reverse. Tinkered with it... now when he pumps up the ball...gas squirts out of the carb. and <br />you guessed it... it won't run...<br />advice gratefully accepted<br />

Need to rebuild the carb and replace the needle and seat for the float.

Thank you... bubbakat for your "diagnosis".<br /><br />since we're new at this do -it -yourself repair stuff... we could use a little (or alot) more help!<br /><br />Obviously we need a repair manual... PDQ- should we get an original or an after market? <br /><br />Is the gas squirt problem one in the same with the failure to run at more than idle speed? or is that a seperate dilemma?<br /><br />Thanks again... and for your patience with our inexperience....

Middleground! <br /><br />thanks for your reinforcement of the "rebuild the carb" plan. <br /><br />Passing on your good advice regarding the manual to the Captain- i'm 1700 miles away.... but aftermarket get's my vote.<br /><br />Parts have been located and are holding in KW (not bad for Island Time!!!) <br /><br />Let the "fix the squirts" adventure begin <br /><br /> PS now i remember w-h-y we sold the 1960's classic Penn Yan (she was a real beauty) w/ original outboard engine... and bought a new jet boat!
