6902M 6hp Evinrude - Shift Lever Spins Freely

Hi everyone. New here!
The shift lever/ mechanism on my 6902M made a "snap" noise when I was checking it out, and now spins freely. Luckily it's in forward, so I may be able to use it for a while fishing Saturday, but obviously I need to fix it. I'll figure it out when I take things apart, but I'm hoping for some insight as to what it is (or could be). Prior to breaking it felt very "soft" when switching gears, especially into forward. Any suggestions?

if it's spinning freely then it's broken up top somewhere. You have to pull the powerhead to get to it which is not a bad job

I mispoke. It can be the part 24 I was thinking of an older motor. You can tell by looking at the shift lever when turning to see if that is the part that is broke.

Thank you very much guys. I figured I would need to take off the powerhead, but I didn't know it may be relatively simple and inexpensive. I appreciate it!

unscreaw fuel filter
unscreaw slow speed needle(take out)
stand engin on flywheel(lower unit sticking into sky)
unscreav 6 bolts(3/8 head bolt),
heng engin on bench and lift powerhead-its all
