69 55 HP stuck in forward gear

Hi all. Hope i can get some help here. alot of great info so far.
I have a 1969 55 hp johnson.LU locked up on me and i got a used one.I emptied all oil out and replenished with MArine C oil.I turned it over and got great reasults. But it is stuck in forward.I used the same selenoid for the hydro electric gears.IS it possible i didnt sit it in there correctly?And help to what could be wrong or help me to trouble shoot from here? I checked the control box and put a meter on it.The nuetral had power when in neutral. The reverse did not.and of course it has power to forward. Just want to get this fixed. Great motor when running.

On that g/c you should have 12 volts to the green wire for neutral, 12 volts to both green and blue for reverse and no voltage to either wire for forward. When you put the solenoid assy back in the g/c they can be tricky to get the plunger back in the oil pump correctly.

Also, so you put in a solenoid, huh? Did you put in the right one? 1968-69 is different than 1970-up.

Hate to ask this, but I have to...you ARE running the motor, right? It won't shift out of forward if not running.

I used the same selenoid that was on the boat from before.It was running fine and changing gears before.So i used the same.
I have always had it running when trying to change gears and when checking for power going to the control box.
I am hoping guessing that i have not put it in the LU correctly.Is the a way to know if you have it in the correctly?

When you have it in correctly and all else is well it will shift. The 68-69 models were sometimes a real B###h.

IS there a way to know if you have it in correctly without going theu all the hassle of putting it back together and starting to check?
Really getting frustrated.

You can spin the drive shaft with a 1/2 drill and attach a battery ground to case and apply 12+ to solenoid wire to test it with it off boat. We had a electric motor with stub shaft that we bench tested them with years ago when I worked for a dealer....
