I have a 68 Johnson 40hp. Can't get a spark. I replaced all wiring because it was in bad shape. Engine cranks over nicely but not a bit of spark. Is there a way to test the coils?

Got a good multimeter? Check the resistance between the points wire and mag plate. Should be Zero ohms with points closed and about an ohm with points open. Check resistance between the spark plug boot and mag plate. Should be several k-ohms. This is about as good as you can do without a $1000 coil tester.

Probably easier to replace coils and points and condensers, easy to do, cost me ?55 to replace the lot under the flywheel took half an hour
good luck
