I use map gas and go forever....sometimes the original OMC paint doesn't even show much harm amazing stuff.

Acetylene, map gas I've used them all. Map gas or an induction here is all you need that in a few crayons.

I think that the ally conducts heat away so fast that it can soak up a far bit of heat ,and I think you gain more by heating moderately and cooling a few times than you do by over heating it once
I looked at using crayons but I could never find ones the right colour.

Yeah colored crayons discolor the paint for sure, I just use light or dark depending on the motor so white on white and the darker on the darker.

Funny in that all my years in welding and machine work, I don’t think I’ve ever heated aluminum to do anything other than preheat large pieces prior to welding.

Broken taps are fun. Especially #10 and smaller. Bolt wise, quicker to just break the bolt off, drill out the center of the bolt with a left hand drill, then use a bolt extractor if the bolt doesn’t back out while drilling

Determining the temp of aluminum is fun because of its lack of IR emissivity.
Experience will get you close reading the “greying” of the metal. Fortunately, aluminum oxide melts at a much higher temp than the base metal below. If you see the oxide layer breaking up your above the melting temp.

That inductive gizmo sure seems cool to me. 2 hundred bucks though is kind of pricey. With my luck it wouldn't work either. Something else that seldom works for me is PB Blaster. I applied it 3x, tapping the bolts in between, and let it sit overnight. Nothing. I might as well have peed on the bolts. Why do people love this crap? It never seems to work.

Anybody want to weigh in on how stupid it would be to just bolt it together with 9 bolts? The part seems very strong to me. I honestly don't think it would make any difference, but what do I know.

Nup ,tried it ....well not exactly but 3 out of 4 head studs aint enough for a. 100cc bike .
If you remove one stud the distance between the next two supporting studs is to great to reliably clamp the head down and it will spit the head gasket out between these two studs....most likely as soon as you start it but it might last a couple of minutes .

I think most of them penetrants are pretty much the same thing in a different can .
I dont think there is any guarantee of success anywhere on the can 😁, and I think that accompanying technique has a fair bit to do with the success ....or not thereof .
Getting a bit of practice in squaring off and drilling out broken bolts is worth the effort. Im looking at repowering my drill press with a split phase motor so I can run it backwards as well ......I have had good success with left hand drill bits and being able to do it in the press would be great 😁.

The PB blaster ( or other potions ) can not get parts the sealing surface at the bolt head !----Now if you drill a 1/8th hole from the side you might get the potion to the threads.

Yeah thats it .....getting whatever potion you choose to the actual work site ( my Granddad used to tell me "a drop of oil in the right place is worth two along side " ) and my thoughts are that heat cycling helps the elixir move thru the joint .
I guess some peeps get the knack. I got good at removing stuck bolts as an app getting knife blades offa large reel mowers .
