A little more digging & a 1967 brochure for the Cobra:

Arrow Glass 1967 catalog

I think this Cobra does look more like your pix. Still a 110HP O/B screamer!

So, im watching some videos... should i maybe just remove the roving and balsa and work on top of that glass? or really get down into the blue stuff? or is the blue stuff the balsa? i was assuming the balsa was where the grid is, its just mush... am i wrong?

Like I said, I have no idea. It doesn't really make sense to me the way it looks. If it is in fact the inner skin of glass on a balsa core, you don't want to risk further damage to the boat before you have a plan to put it back. The outer hull may need more support then the trailer provides, once you start removing glass & balsa mulch. It may even cause the glass hull to ripple & wave as it sags under it's own weight & your weight moving around in the boat during demo. Or worse, an edge on a bunk may cause a crack in the hull under your weight in the boat.

Let's compare your hull to mine:

Mine is a roughly 3/16-5/16 thick layup of just alternating layers of glass & resin, not unlike looking at the edge of a 3/4" sheet of plywood, solid through & through, mostly no voids, but clearly multiple layers.

Your hull is more like a thicker version of Luaun plywood. Thinner, light weight layers of glass (the veneer) sandwiching a core/honeycomb of balsa. Originally the balsa core may have been an outgrowth of the conversion from wood only hulls, to wooden hulls coated w/ glass & resin/epoxy for waterproofing, to fiberglass only hulls. The balsa gives bulk & backing to the glass, at a lighter weight then fiberglass covered ply or a fiberglass only hull, but offers very little strength or integrity, EXCEPT in conjunction with the glass on BOTH sides.

But much harder to rebuild like it was originally. Maybe not even be possible to rebuild like it was. But you'll need some advice about reinforcing the hull. That maybe as simple as 4 alternating layers of 1.5oz CSM & 1708 layed up across the entire hull & onto the hull sides before redoing the stringers, transom & deck as most here have. BTW: Find WoodOnGlass's signature line & use his glass layup schedule for all those components. But not w/ out some expert guidance. I'm more of the 'former pert' kind of ex-pert.:D

No idea what that blue stuff is. It could be a paper ad from god knows what, that made it into the hull construction by unknown means & was left instead of removed. Could be anything. Somewhere on iBoats forum is a shot of the plastic that was used to cover the foam inside an original upholstery covered seat. It was the outer wrapping plastic from a brand of toilet paper.... Ran short on the plastic for wrapping foam, or an early recycling effort?!?!? Who knows, odd for sure, but it worked for 20+years....

Balsa core hulls

Balsa core hulls

Im having trouble finding someone that knows how to repair these hulls. ive got through the roving and what seems to be where balsa used to exist. here are a few photos, just wondering what route i should take...

thanks in advance,

.donnie

Re: Balsa core hulls

yippie! i went to take a look at it today hoping the water would have evaporated. and it did. apparently the blue stuff is just what ever they used to glue the stringer in. must have been a mix of the water and the blue from the hull reflecting to make it appear blue. soooo, under the honey comb is just the bottom of the hull. time to go to home depot and get that angle grinder weve been talking about, no?

was feeling a bit defeated, now im feeling optimistic. :)

How did this project turn out? I just bought a 72 trihull and have same issues.
