Hi, been through the forums can't seem to find an answer. I have a 1967 Evinrude 40 HP model 40753E A couple of days ago I took it out and it acted like it wasn't getting fuel. Took off the filter cover and sure enough the screen was clogged. I tore the gasket a little when I took the cover off but decided to stick it back together and see if it would work. Took it out yesterday and it ran fine for about 20 minutes. Stopped, hung out in the sun a little while, decided to head for home, and bam...same problem as the day before. I pulled the filter cover off, and this time most of the center of the gasket came with it. OK, so I know I need a new gasket and screen, problem is...where the heck do I get one? I"ve scoured the internet and have yet to find one....I can't even find a replacement fuel pump just in case this one is going south. All the parts lists go back to 68 for this motor, and most of them are pump rebuild kits....gasket and screen are no where to be found....

Should I make a template from the old one and cut out a new gasket....is there a cross referance for a new filter gasket package....new replacement fuel pump....anything??? help

Hi, I would like to cross referance it with a 68...but the link you gave has 4 different 40853's all with letter's at the end. Mine is a 40753E, I'm sure the 7 means 1967 for mine and the 8 means 1968 in the list, and the E at the end of mine means electric start, but the ending letters for the 68 have me confused. Also, I can't seem to find which sub group has the fuel pump listed. I see carb group and fuel tank group, but neither has a pump or filter screen listed.

thanks for your time,

Sheese! The fuel filter screen is 312675, the gasket is 312679. It is shown on the powerhead group in my '68 book. Any Evinrude dealer worth his salt should have them.
40753 means 40hp 1967, electric start Big Twin, long shaft.
40853 means the same thing for 1968
The letter at the end on the end of any of the model numbers indicate a mid-year change in some part.....or the version before the change. In this case it means the lower unit water pickup and water pump housing was changed. It does NOT mean electric start. the 5 tells you that. 3 means long shaft, 2 is short shaft.

Re: 67 40 Hp Fuel Filter

hahahaha!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!! And I'm being sincere. I'll head out to Pier 152 (an evinrude dealer) tomorrow and pick up a couple. I really do try and garner as much info as I can before I ask a question...and sometimes they are based on reasoning....sometimes..hahaha

My questions may sound silly to knowledgable marine folks, but when I do ask a question whether it be here, the cadillac forum, jeep forum, volvo forum, hot british chick forum...etc...I really have done as much research as my brain can stand. And after all, isn't asking questions and giving helpful answers the spirt of these forums to begin with?

Once again, Thanks...and I'm sure I'll will make somebodys head hurt again in the future.

later,
