Hello everyone, I am new to the world of boating, and like many others Im sure, dont have a whole lot of money to throw around for the hobby, but I did recently aquire a 1965 Lonestar, it has a single cockpit with steering wheel and controls. When I bought it, it didnt have an engine on it but the guy gave me what looks to be the original one, a 35hp evin(looked like he had stripped everything off he wanted). I also just recently purchased a 35hp merc probably a mid to late eighties model, my question is will this 35 merc motor hook up to the control arm thats on the boat, and will the throttle work still even though it came from a different boat as well.

Mercs are not compatible with OMC/Evinrude/Johnson controls...but you should be able to find a Merc control for not much $$...check the classifieds at www.aomci.org

Here she is, not much to look at but, then again nothin some paintstripper and new paint cant fix as long as it doesn't cost me much more to get her in the water mechaniclly!
One question my newfound friends, forgive me if I seem a bit dull to this subject but believe me I will wisen up. By "control" your talking about the hydraulic arm that turns the actual engine, but will the "throttle control" that came with the merc work for the boat.

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

I think the reason I'm having so much trouble trying to actually id the boat is because 65 is the year that Chrysler took over Lonestar, the front deck and fishing seats are original because the deck has aluminum supports under it that are for sure stock. And thank gosh theres no rot that I've seen in any of it. Should I do something for extra support where the engine clamps on or should I trust its strength as it is, I believe the original motor was the 35 evin, so I wouldnt think the 35 merc wouldnt weigh to much more....Sorry for the mundane questions.

Pretty sure that isn't a Starcraft. I'd say Lonestar or Texas Maid.

Steering controls are generally universal. Throttle controls are not.

Well he gave me a throttle control with the engine. So you say the control will work with the merc though. There is an arm that comes off the engine which I assume connects to the control arm, but it seems to be too long, but if I hook the control directly to the engine, it doesnt seem like Ill be able to change the trim

That's a sweet lookin' old Lonestar...you will need different throttle/shift controls for the Merc...the OMC controls on the boat won't adapt to a Merc.

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

Ive got the other throttle/shift cables, Im just trying to figure out how to get the steering control to work with what Ive got, Mine doesnt work like the one in the picture posted, the one thats on the boat right now is side mounted and is offset to one side.(bolted in said position)
Heres what I got tell me what you think....and what I need...or if you need to see or know more that I'm missing

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

The steering cable that is on the boat now is designed to hook up to a motor that is a tiller, or one that was hooked up to a pulley system (old-style system composed of cables and pulleys). From my knowledge, you cannot use that cable on that motor, because the merc requires a thru-tube steering cable which passes through the tube above the mounting bracket on the motor and the connects to a rod, which then connects to the motor.
My guess is that it will fit perfectly on the evinrude becasue it was probably a pulley-cable controlled engine that was converted to the modern roatary syatem which is on your boat now.
Hope this helps!!

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

does that mean this motor is useless for this boat or can I modify it in some way to where it will still be compatible in some way

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

The cable will need to be changed to a thru tilt tube type of the correct length. Motor is fine.

If you intend on using this steering cable for this boat, unfortunately this motor is 'useless' for this boat. Keep the motor though! It is not useless!!:D
This is the type of cable you need for this boat (not the exact one but same style-those are for Johnnies and Rudes): http://www.iboats.com/Dual-Cable-Si...66517661--**********.827982364--view_id.40161

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

The evinrude is totally striped and there is nothing left of the steering. I found the pulleys on either back side of the boat but they dont look like they have been used is a while

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

I don't reccomend this because I don't know if it should or could be done BUT it looks like you could connect the end of the cable that is on the boat to the motor.
You could do this by removing the rod that is on the motor now, and then bring the metal rod that is on the cable up to that point and attach it to the motor via the hole in the end of the rod.
However, the cable is probably too short to do this.
Again, I don't reccomend this!! Someone else may chime in as to whether this is a possibility.
Good luck!

Post some pictures of the Evinrude if you get a chance.
Is it in running condition or not? If it is, you should be able to easily connect that cable that is on the boat to the Rude.

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

Dang you had me worried for a bit, so it is something relatively simple to get "this" motor to work for "this" boat, Im sorry if I seem dense but actually I am when it comes to this sort of thing. Amazing I can tear a dirt or street bike to nothin and build it back but Im lost right now

Re: 65 Lonestar questions

I do know enough about all engines to know that the Rude is totally hammered crap, the Merc that I got is in great shape and I want to make it work with this boat instead of pouring money into a old worn out engine
