I have a 1964 28hp Johnson Seahorse outboard that has always ran good and has a manual shifter. The other night I was out for a putt and it started acting like it wanted to pop out of gear and than it started acting like it wanted to stall out and I'de give it some gas and it would take off and run fine, than it wouldn't shift out of forward. I drained the lower unit which was really milky and put some dfresh lower unit lube in and took it out for another put, as it ran fine in forward but just wouldn't idle down like it should, like I said it would putt along fine just at a higher idle, and after awhile it started idleing lower like it's supposed to so I tried the shifter and I could shift it it just shifted hard and almost got stuck in reverse but I was able to bang it forward so I wouldn't have to go in reverse all the way back to the house.by the time I got back to the dock it would go into forward and nuetral. This is all while I had the shift cable disconnected. Any ideas?
