Okey dokey, over the past few weeks I was blessed with a few days I could work on the boat. I got the bottom sanded to bare metal. I bought primerless urethane that I used on the seams, and self etching ZC primer i got at NAPA. The urethane is what is used to install windshields, and never lets go yet stays pliable, great stuff.

Then I primed with the ZC.

Sorry about that, ran out of room. Anyway, I had tried to spray the rustoleum primer but that didn't work out. I went to the tried and true....foam roller:D

So now I wait until another nice day so I can sand and repeat. Then its time to pain the bottom and roll her over. I plan on painting the sides when I get it back on the trailer.

Looking good! I'm glad to have most of my painting done but I have my topsides to do yet that I'll be starting soon. I love how the lapstrake continues down onto the bottom on those older hulls. Very cool.

Thanks Spellbound. I have finally started painting her yesterday. I rolled the first coat of bottom paint and then the rain started again. If it stops today I'll get the second coat on and then will be able to put it on the trailer. Then the sides get painted and the interior fun begins. I haven't even started stripping the top yet. I am very anxious to work on it. Dale

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Hi Guys, (and Gals), well the weather looks like its going to be nice from now on and in a week or two it will probably be in the upper 90's, LOL. I have been preoccupied working on the bass boat, more specifically the engine I know, forgive me. Now its crunch time for the SC. I have painted the bottom with Rustoleum and have given it a second coat. It dosen't seem to be drying to a hard coat, does this take a while or whats going on? I am working on getting a different trailer with bunks to set the boat on, but naturally I don't want it to stick to the trailer. I primed it with ZC and then with rustoleum aluminum primer before I painted it, I hope I didn't mess up somewhere. Any advice/suggestions? I want to get it on trailer to paint the sides (I need slight metal straightening first) Will post pics soon. Thanks to all, Dale

Well the bunk trailer didn't work out. It would take more work than it's worth. I guess the roller one will have to do. I have been working on the boat, a little at a time. I drove over 225 miles today to buy and rip apart a Bayliner. I got the windshield, front hatch cover, stove, swim platform for rear, and a bunch of assorted teak trim. Last week I finally finished painting the bottom hull with 3 coats. Then I put it on the trailer by myself on the day I was home with a hurt back. Wifey was not happy with me, but it was too late:p The next day I painted the sides. After she was back on the trailer I looked good at the transom:( yep, its bad too. Better safe than sorry, its next on the list of things to do. Then I will finish painting the boat, with exception of the hard top. I've decided to keep the top, with minor modifications for the new windshield and such. Here are a few pics.

I am not painting the transom until I replace the wood.

This was the first coat with red. What do yall think? I have been trying to post pics for a week but me and computers don't always get along. At least I will be easy to find on the water:D

Re: 63 Starchief Restore ( God help me )

Thanks JA and BC. Been a long time coming. I need to ask help/advice from the group. I am thinking of installing an aluminum grid for the floor and raise it up about 4 1/2". I want to install a belly gas tank and a live well in the floor. Do ya'll think this is advisable and will I have a problem drawing suction for the OB if the tank is in the floor? I am aware many boats have tanks like this but I don't know if they have elect pumps or something. This is my next step after the transom rebuild. Thanks, Dale

I don't think you'll have any suction issues. I had a tank all the way in the bow of my Jupiter plumbed by a copper line that ran under the full length of the deck. No issues. And that was just a portable tank with a fairly narrow line.

How is this project going. I'm currently working on mine. Very cool job. give me a better idea on what my boat was supposed to look like.
the previous owner slopped paint on the boat so now I am stripping the paint off the top. They did a bunch of quick fixes and cheesy wiring job.
